DR. CORNWELL'S EDUCATIONAL SERIES
POETRY FOR BEGINNERS:
A Selection of Short and Easy Poems
READING AND RECITATION
SCHOOLS AND FAMILIES.
HAMILTON, ADAMS, AND CO., PATERNOSTER ROW ;
EDINBURGH: OLIVER AND BOYD.
Since the publication of this Book I have learnt that the title, “ Easy Poetry," is borne by a Work belonging to Messrs. ROUTLEDGE and Sons. As far as this Work is concerned, the title is therefore cancelled, and it now appears under the name of “Poetry for Beginners," and so will better correspond with other Works of the Series, as “Grammar for Beginners," "Geography for Begin. ners,” and “ Spelling for Beginners;” all of which are intended for children of about the same age and attainments.
IN a COLLECTION of Poetry little more is required than taste and judgment in the selection of pieces which are suited to the persons for whose use it is intended.
In this little book the aim has been to form a collection of such Poems as will be interesting to children; and which, while cultivating the imagination, and so forming a correct taste, shall at the same time instil into their minds only pure and noble sentiments and right principles.
With the poems of each Poet not now living is given the date of his birth and death; and a few Notes are scattered here and there explanatory of
such words as a child might not always find in his dictionary.
The book is, of course, intended as a Reading Book in class or otherwise, as well as a Magazine from which youngsters may be supplied with short and simple poems best fitted to be committed to MEMORY.
