No part of history is more beautiful and instructive than that of Esther. Though only a Jewess orphan, she became, by awonderfulprovidence, the favorite of an eastern monarch, by whom her kindred were held in fearful subjection. Haman was that monarch's chief minister of state, and he required a homage, bordering on divine worship to be paid him by all the king's subjects. But Mordecai refused to do it, doubtless, because it violated his conscience-Ex. xx. 5,
and because Haman was an Agagite, against whom the Lord had ordered his people to maintain righteous opposition. Ex. xvii. 14; 1 Sam. xv. 1, 2. To remove him, Haman plotted the massacre of all the Jews, but Esther divulging it to the king, the wickedness of Haman rebounded on his own head, and he was hanged on the very gallows he had erected for Mordecai. Our engraving represents Esther, on the eve of a royal banquet, impeaching Haman of the bloody intention to exterminate myriads of Israelites. The trial was very great to Esther. For thirty days the King had seemed alienated from her, and her going to him was at the risk of her life. But her duty was obvious. The command of her God was supreme, and the law of Persia must be disregarded. She went to the king doubtless armed by prayer, and that God who always honors those who honor him, gave her success, and, through the king, caused the disgrace and overthrow of the wicked Haman.

Our journey pursue, Roll round with the year, And never stand still Till the Master appear.' TEACHERS! valued and honoured teachers! Here is New Year's Day come again. Life is advancing! eternity, with all its tremendous and overpowering revelations is at hand; multitudes are perishing; thousands, and even hundreds of thousands of children, demand your instant attention, your tender sympathies, your fervid and unceasing prayers: up, then, and be labouring for God! Shake off your lethargy! Be full of zeal and animation! Let every holy energy be awakened, and concentrated, for the honour of Christ-for the diffusion of the knowledge of the truth-for the extension of the Redeemer's empire!
There never was a period, when the development of holy energy in connexion with the Sunday school cause, was more requisite than at the present hour. The vast increase of the population; the spirit of inquiry which is awakened; the efforts now made to educate the people; the moral dangers to which the young are exposed, and the increasing necessity that they should be educated on purely Christian principles, and be trained effectually for eternity -combine in showing how desirable-how important-how requisite is the full development of the intelligent and holy activities of a Christian teacher's mind and heart in these eventful and spiritstirring times.
Teachers, all are awake now, and you must not be slumbering. If the sentinel be found asleep at his post in the time of war, his
offence, according to the laws of the camp, is deserving of death. If you are found cold, drowsy, and insensible, when children are dying, and youth are passing by thousands, into the world beyond the grave, what do you not merit ? Brace yourselves then, teachers ! Gird up the loins of the mind. Buckle on the armour. Have 'the shield of faith' on the arm. See that the breast-plate of righteousness' is covering the heart. Put on 'the helmet of salvation.' Have 'the feet shodden with the preparation of the gospel of peace.' Let the sword of the Spirit' be drawn from its scabbard, and vigorously wielded; then, go forth against the votaries of the world, the adherents of error, the powers of darkness, the emissaries of hell. Go forth even against Satan himself, and endeavour, in reliance on the omnipotence of your great Captain, to rescue many dear children from the snares of the seducer, from the cruelty of the destroyer.
You never had, teachers, finer opportunities of labouring for Christ, and of doing good, than at the present period. Every facility seems to be presented. Every door seems to he opening. Ministers invite you. Members of churches make their appeals to you. Parents earnestly intreat you. The growing intelligence of the age fervently addresses you: while crowds on crowds of dear children say to you, most distinctly and impressively, 'Show to us, teachers, the way of salvation, that we perish not!' Can you, then, decline the request? Can you close your ears against the appeal? Can you be insensible to the claims urged? Impossible! Impossible! You will, you must, come forward! The intelligence of the mind, the energy of the body, the opportunities of the life, the tenderest emotions of your nature, the most intense
