In these homely Rhymes I have made the attempt to draw the outlines of a picture of what, alas! not all among us are, but of what all ought to be; sober, diligent, devout, and painstaking Christians; quiet, orderly, industrious, and contented;-kind, loving, and charitable to each other, as Parents and Children, as Husbands and Wives, as Brethren, and Friends, and Neighbours; -availing themselves thankfully and constantly of all the means of grace and of instruction for themselves and their families;-and so ever pressing forward to obtain the prize of the high calling of GOD in CHRIST JESUS. And to you, for whom most of these little Pieces were at first composed, and separately put forth, would I now dedicate them, in the collected form in which they here appear. May GoD of His great mercy grant, that the Christian virtues and graces so recommended may, through His Holy Spirit, grow and bring forth fruit abundantly among you, to His honour and glory, and your own present and eternal welfare!
