PARISH RHYMES,

FOR

SCHOOLS AND COTTAGES,

BY THE

REV. R. ALLAN SCOTT, M. A.

LATE OF BALLIOL COLLEGE, OXFORD:

CURATE OF CHURCH EATON, STAFFORDSHIRE.

LONDON;

J. G. AND F. RIVINGTON; SIMPKIN, MARSHALL, AND CO.
WOLVERHAMPTON; W. PARKE.

MDCCCXLI.

640.

TO THE

PARISHIONERS OF CHURCH EATON.

In these homely Rhymes I have made the attempt to draw the outlines of a picture of what, alas! not all among us are, but of what all ought to be; sober, diligent, devout, and painstaking Christians; quiet, orderly, industrious, and contented;-kind, loving, and charitable to each other, as Parents and Children, as Husbands and Wives, as Brethren, and Friends, and Neighbours; -availing themselves thankfully and constantly of all the means of grace and of instruction for themselves and their families;-and so ever pressing forward to obtain the prize of the high calling of GOD in CHRIST JESUS.

And to you, for whom most of these little Pieces were at first composed, and separately put forth, would I now dedicate them, in the collected form in which they here appear.

May GoD of His great mercy grant, that the Christian virtues and graces so recommended may, through His Holy Spirit, grow and bring forth fruit abundantly among you, to His honour and glory, and your own present and eternal

welfare!

R. A. SCOTT.

Church Eaton, May, 1841.

The arrangement of the Metrical Pieces and
Texts in this little Volume is nearly that adopted
by the Rev. R. W. Evans, in his Hymns for the
Christian Workman,"-a Work somewhat similar
in design to this, which was placed in my hands
while these Rhymes, in their separate form, were
passing through the press, and which first led me to
think of publishing them in their present shape.
