Of paying tribute.

CHAP XX.

Of the refurrection. 17 And he beheld them, and faid take his wife, and raife up feed unWhat is this then that is written, to his brother. The ftone which the buildere 12jected, the fame is become the head of the corner?

Whofoever fhall fall upon that fhall be broken; but on whomfoever it fhall fall, it will grind him to powder.

19 And the chief priests and the fcribes the fame hour fought to lay hands on him; and they feared the people: for they perceived that he had fpoken this parable against them.

20 And they watched him, and fent forth fpies, which fhould feign themfelves juft men,that they might take hold of his words, that fo they might deliver him unto the power and authority of the governor.

21 And they afked him, faying, Mafter, we know that thou fayeft and teachèft rightly, y, neither accepteft thou the perfon of any, but teacheft the way of God truly;

22 Is it lawful for us to give tribute unto Cefar, or no?

23 Bat he perceived their craftinefs, and faid unto them, Why tempt ye me?

24 Shew me a penny. Whofe Image and fuperfcription hath it? They answered, and faid, Cefar's.

25 And he faid unto them, Render, therefore, unto Cefar the things which be Cefar's, and unto God the things which be God's.

26 And they could not take hold of his words before the people: and they marvelled at his anfwer, and held their peace.

There were, therefore, feven brethren: and the firft took a wife, and died without children.

35 But they which fhall be accounted worthy to obtain that world, and the refurrection from the dead, neither marry nor are given in marriage:

36 Neither can they die any more: for they are equal unto the angels; and are the children of God, being the children of the refurrection.

37 Now that the dead are raised, even Mofes fhewed at the bub, when he calleth the Lord the God of Abraham, and the God of Ifaac, and the God of Jacob.

38 For he is not a God of the dead, but of the living: for all live unto him.

Chrift commendeth the poor widow.

2 And he faw also a certain peor widow cafting in thither two mites. 3 And he faid, Of a truth I fay into you, That this poor widow hath caft in more than they all:

4 For all these bave of their abundauce caft in unto the offerings of God: but the of her penury hath caft in all the living that the had

5 ¶ And as fome fpake of the temple, how it was adorned with goodly ftones and gifts, he faid,

6 As for thefe things which yet behold, the days will come, in the which there fhall not be left one Rone upon another that shall not be thrown down.

7 And they asked him, faying, Mafter, but when shall these things be? and what fign will there be when these things fhall come to pafs?

8 And he said, Take heed that ye be not deceived: for many fhall come in my name, faying, I am Christ; and the time draweth near: go ye not, therefore, after them.

9 But when ye fhall hear of wars aud commotions be not terrified: for these things muft firft come to pals, but the end is not by and by.

10 Then faid he unto them, Nation fhall rife againft nation, and kingdom against kingdom;

12 But before all thefe they shall lay their hands on you, and perfecute you, delivering you up to the fynagogues, and into prifons, being brought before kings and rulers for my name's fake. for a

And it fhall turn to you

13 teftimony.

14 Settle it, therefore, in your hearts, not to meditate before what ye hall answer;

15 For I will give you a mouth and wifdom, which all your adverfaries fhall not be able to gainfay nor refift.

16 And ye shall be betrayed both by parents, and brethren, and kingfolks, and friends; and some of you fhall they caufe to be put to death.

17 And he shall be hated of all men for my name's fake.

18 But there fhall not an hair of your head perish.

19 In your patience poffefs ye your fouls.

20 And when ye fhall fee Jerufalem compaffed with armies, then know that the defolation thereof is nigh.

21 Then let them which are in Judea flee to the mountains; and let them which are in the midst of it depart out; and let not them that are in the countries enter thereinto.

22 For thefe be the days of vengeance, that all things which are written may be fulfilled.

23 Bat woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give fuck, in those days! for there fhall be great diftrefs in the land, and wrath upon this people.

24 And they fhall fall by the edge of the fword, and fhall be led away captive into all nations: and Jeru

Of the coming of Chrift. CHAP. XXI, XXII. The paffover prepared. falem fhall be trodden down of the Gentiles, until the times of the Gentiles be fulfilled.

25 And there fhall be figns in the fun, and in the moon, and inthe ftars; and upon the earth diftrefs of nations, with perplexity; the fea and the waves roaring;

26 Men's hearts failing them for fear, and for looking after thofe things which are coming on the earth: for the powers of heaven fhall be haken.

27 And then shall they fee the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory.

28 And when thefe things begin to come to pass, then look up, and hift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.

29 And he fpake to them a parable; Behold the fig-tree, and all the trees;

30 When they now fhoot forth, ye fee and know of your own felves that fummer is now nigh at hand.

31 So likewife ye, when ye fee thefe things come to pafs, know ye that the kingdom of God is nigh at hand.

32 Verily I fay unto you, This generation fhall not pafs away till all be fulfilled.

33 Heaven and earth fhall pass away; but my words fhall not pafs away.

34 And take heed to yourselves, left at any time your hearts be overcharged with furfeiting, and drunkenness, and cares of this life, and fo that day come upon you un

awares.

35 For as a fnare fhall it come on all them that dwell on the face of the whole earth.

36 Watch ye, therefore, and pray always, that ye may be accounted worthy to escape all thefe things that fhall come to pafs, and to ftand before the Son of man.

37 And in the day-time he was teaching in the temple; and at night he went out,and abodeinthe mount that is called the mount of Olives.

38 And all the people came early in the morning to him in the temple for to hear him.

CHAP. XXII.
The Jews confpire against Chrift.
NOW the feat of unleavened

bread drew nigh, which is

called the Paflover.

2 And the chief priefts and fcribes fought how they might kill him; for they feared the people.

31 Then entered Satan into Judas, f named Ifcariot, being of the number of the twelve.

4 And he went his way, and communed with the chief priefts and captains, how he might betray him unto them.

And they were glad, and covenanted to give him money.

6 And he promised and fought opportunity to betray him unto them in the abfence of the mul titude.

7 Then came the day of unleavened bread, when the paffover must be killed.

8 And he fent Peter and John, faying, Go and prepare us the passover, that we may eat.

9 Andthey fat unto him, Where wilt thou that we prepare?

Io And he faid unto them, Behold, when ye are entered into the city, there fhall a man meet you bearing a pitcher of water; follow him into the houfe where he entereth in.

11 Andye fhall fay unto the good man of the house, The Mafter faith unto thee, Where is the gueftchamber, where I fhall eat the pafaover with my difciples?

12 And he fhall thew you alarge upper room furnished: there make ready

16 For I fay unto you, I will not any more eat thereof, until it be fulfilled in the kingdom of God.

17 And he took the cup, and gave thanks, and faid, Take this, and divide it among yourselves:

18 For I fay unto you, I will not drink of the fruit of the vine, until the kingdom of God fhall come.

19 And he took bread. and gave thanks, and brake it, and gave unto them, faying, This is my body which is given for you; this do in remembrance of me.

20 Likewife alfo the cup after fupper, faying, This cup is the new teftament in my bloed, which is fhed for you.

21 But, behold, the hand ofhim that betrayeth me is with me on

the table.

22 And truly theSon of mangoeth, as it was determined: but woe unto that man by whom he is betrayed! 23 And they began to enquire among themfelves which of them it was that fhoud do this thing.

24 And there was alío a ftrife among them which of them should be counted the greatcft.

25 And he faic unto them, The kin of the Gentiles exercife lordfhip over them; and they that exercite authority upon them are callcd Benefactors.

16 But ye shall not be fo: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that doth ferve.

37 For whether is greater, he that itteth at meat, or he that ferveth? is

28 Ye are they which have continued with me in my temptations: 29 And I appoint unto you a kingdom, as my father hath appointed unto me;

30 That ye may eat and drink at my table in my kingdom, and fit on thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Ifrael.

31 ¶ And the Lord faid, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath defired to have you, that he may fit you as wheat:.

32 But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not; and when thou art converted ftrengthen thy brethren.

33 And he faid unto him, Lord, am ready to go with thee, both into prifon and to death.

34 And he said, I tell thee, Peter, the cock fhall not crow this day before that thou fhalt thrice deny that thou knoweût me.

35 And he faid unto them, When fent you without purfe, and fcrip, and thocs, lacked ye any thing? And they faid, Nothing.

36 Then faid he unto them, But now he that hath a purfe, let him take it, and likewife bis fcrip: and he that hath no fword, let him fell is garment and buy one

37 For I fay unto you, That this that is written muft yet be accom plished in me, And he was reckon ed among the tranfgreffors: for the things concerning ane have an end.

38 And they faid, Lord, behold, here are two fwords. And he said unto them, It is enough.

39 And he came out, and went, as he was wont, to the mount of Olives; and his difciples alfo followed him.

40 And, when he was at the place, he faid unto them, Pray that ye enter not into temptation.

Chriß is betrayed by Judas, CHA P. XXII. and denied of Peter 41 And he was withdrawn from high prieft's houfe. And Peter them about a ftonc's caft, and followed afar off.

42 Saying, Father, if thou be willing, remove this cup from me: nevertheless, not my will, but thine, be done.

43 And there appeared an angel unto him from heaven, ftrengtheuing him.

44 And, being in an agony, he prayed more earneftly: and his Iweat was as it were great drops of blood falling down to the ground.

45 And when he rofe up from prayer, and was come to his difciples, he found them fleeping for forrow.

46 And faid unto them, Why fleep ye? rife and pray, left ye en-. ter into temptation.

471 And while he yet fpake, behold a multitude, and he that was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them, and drew near unto Jefus to kifs him.

48 But Jefus faid unto him, Judas, betrayeft thou the Son of man with a kifs?

49 When they which were about him faw what would follow, they faid unto him, Lord, fhall we fmite with the fword?

50 And one of them fmote a fervant of the high prieft, and cut off his right ear.

5rAnd Jefus anfwered, and faid, Suffer ye thus far. And he touched his ear, and healed him.

52 Then Jefus faid unto the chief priefts, and captains of the temple, and the elders, which were come to him, Be ye come out, as against athief, with fwords and ftaves?

53 When I was daily with you in the temple ye ftretched forth no hands against me: but this is your hour, and the power of darkness 54 Then took they him, and led him, and brought him into the

55 And when they had kindled a fire in the midst of the hall, and were fat down together, Peter fat down among them.

56 But a certain maid beheld him as he fat by the fire, and carneftly looked upon him, and faid, This man was alfo with him.

57 And he denied him, faying, Woman, I know him not.

58 And after a little while another faw him, and faid, Thou art alfo of them. And Peteríaid, Man,I am not.

59 And about the space of one hour after, another confidently affirmed, faying, Of a truth this fellow alfo was with him; for he is a Galilean.

60 And Peter faid, Man, I know not what thou fayeft. And immediately, while he yet ipake, the cock crew

1 And the Lord turned, and looked upon Peter: and Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how he had faid unto him, Before the cock crow thou fhalt deny me thrice.

62 And Peter went out, and wept bitterly.

63 And the men that held Jefus mocked him, and fmote him.

64 And, whenthey had blindfolded him, they ftruck him on the face, and afked him, faying, Prophefy; who is it that fmote thee?

65 And many other things blafphemously fpake they againft him

66 T And as foon as it was day the elders of the people, and the chief priests, and the fcribes came, together, and led him into their council,

67 Saying, Art thou the Chrift? tell us. And he faid unto them, If tell you ye will no believe;
