CHAP. I. VER. 1. ΠΑΥΛΟΣ καὶ Τιμόθεος δοῦλοι Ἰησοῦ Χριστ τοῦ, πᾶσι τοῖς ἁγίοις ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ, τοῖς οὖσιν ἐν Φιλίπποις, σὺν ἐπισκόποις καὶ διακόνοις·

And let these also first be proved; then let them use the office of a deacon, being found blameless. Even so must their wives be grave, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things. Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well. For they that have used the office of a deacon well, purchase to themselves a good degree, and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus, 1 Tim. iii. 8-13. also Acts vi. ver. 1-6.

Καθώς ἐστι δίκαιον ἐμοὶ τοῦτο φρονεῖν ὑπὲρ πάντων ὑμῶν, διὰ τὸ ἔχειν με ἐν τῇ καὶ καρδίᾳ ὑμᾶς, ἔν τε τοῖς δεσμοῖς μου, τῇ ἀπολογίᾳ, καὶ βεβαιώσει τοῦ εὐαγγε λίου, συγκοινωνούς μου τῆς χάριτος πάντας ὑμᾶς ὄντας.

Even as it is meet for me to think this of you all, a because I have you in my heart; inasmuch as both in my bonds, and in b the defence and confirmation of the Gospel, ye all are † partakers of my grace.

VER. 15:

Τινὲς μὲν καὶ διὰ φθόνον καὶ ἔριν, τινὲς δὲ καὶ δι ̓ εὐδοκίαν τὸν Χριστὸν κηρύσσουσιν. Some indeed preach Christ even of envy and strife; and some also of good will:

VER. 16.

Οἱ μὲν ἐξ ἐριθείας, τὸν Χριστὸν καταγγέλλουσιν οὐχ ἁγνῶς, οἰόμενοι θλίψιν ἐπιφέρειν τοῖς δεσμοῖς μου·

The one preach Christ of contention, not sincerely, supposing to add afliction to my bonds:

VER. 17.

Οἱ δὲ ἐξ ἀγάπης, εἰδότες ὅτι εἰς ἀπολογίαν τοῦ εὐαγγελίου κεῖμαι.

But the other of love, knowing that I am set for the defence of the Gospel. a See on Acts ix. ver. 15.

VER. 18.

Τί γάρ ; πλὴν παντὶ τρόπῳ, εἴτε προ φάσει, εἴτε ἀληθείᾳ, Χριστὸς καταγγέλ λεται, καὶ ἐν τούτῳ χαίρω, ἀλλὰ καὶ χαβήσομαι.

What then? notwithstanding every way, whether in pretence, or in truth, Christ is preached; and I therein do rejoice, yeu, and will rejoice.

VER. 19.

Οἶδα γὰρ ὅτι τοῦτό μοι ἀποβήσεται εἰς σωτηρίαν διὰ τῆς ὑμῶν δεήσεως, καὶ ἐπιχορηγίας τοῦ Πνεύματος Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ.

a For I know that this shall turn to my salvation b through your prayer, and the supply of the Spirit of Jesus Christ.

a And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose, Rom. viii. 28. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory, 2 Cor. iv. 17. That the trial of your faith, being much more precious than of gold that perisheth, though it be tried with fre, might be found unto praise and honour and glory at the appearing of Jesus Christ: Whom having not seen, ye love: in whom though now ye see him not, yet believing, ye rejoice with joy unspeakable and full of glory: Receiving the

end of your faith, even the salvation of your souls, 1 Pet. i. 7-9.

VER. 20.

Κατὰ τὴν ἀποκαραδοκίαν καὶ ἐλπίδα μου, ὅτι ἐν οὐδενὶ αἰσχυνθήσομαι, ἀλλ ̓ ἐν γαλυνθήσεται Χριστὸς ἐν τῷ σώματί μου, πάσῃ παῤῥησίᾳ, ὡς πάντοτε, καὶ νῦν μεεἴτε διὰ ζωῆς, εἴτε διὰ θανάτου·

VER. 21.

Ἐμοὶ γὰρ τὸ ζῆν, Χριστός· καὶ τὸ ἀποθανεῖν, κέρδος

a For to me to live is Christ, b and to die is gain.

a For all seek their own, not the things which are Jesus Christ's, Phil. ii. 21. But God forbid that I should glory, save in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom the world is crucified unto me, and I unto the world, Gal. vi. 14. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory, Col. iii. 4.

πὶς ἔργου, καὶ τί αἱρήσομαι οὐ γνωρίζω.

But if I live in the flesh, a this is the fruit of my labour: yet what I shall choose I wot not.
