whole armour of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places. Wherefore take unto you the whole armour of God, that ye may be able to withstand in the evil day, and, having done all, to stand. Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness; And your feet shod with the preparation of the Gospel of peace; Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked. And take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God: Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints, Eph. vi. 11 -18. That thou by them mightest war a good warfare. 1 Tim. i. 18.

VER. 4.

Οὐδεὶς στρατευόμενος ἐμπλέκεται ταῖς τοῦ βίου πραγματείαις, ἵνα τῷ στρατολογήσαντι ἀρέσῃ.

No man that warreth a entangleth himself with the affairs of this life; b that he may please him who hath chosen him to be a soldier.

For which I am an ambassador in bonds; that therein I may speak boldly, as I ought to speak, Eph. vi. 19, 20. But I would ye should understand, brethren, that the things which happened unto me have fallen out rather unto the furtherance of the Gospel; So that

my bonds in Christ are manifest in all the palace, and in all other places;

And many of the brethren in the

Lord, waxing confident by my bonds, are much more bold to speak the word without fear, Phil. i. 12-14. Finally, brethren, pray for us, that the word of the Lord may have free course, and be glorified, even as it is with you, 2 Thess. iii. 1.

Ἐν μεγάλῃ δὲ οἰκίᾳ οὐκ ἔστι μόνον σκεύη χρυσὰ καὶ ἀργυρᾶ, ἀλλὰ καὶ ξύλινα καὶ ὀστράκικα· καὶ ἃ μὲν εἰς τιμὴν, ἃ δὲ εἰς ἀτιμίαν.

a But in a great house there are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some to honour, and some to dishonour.

a But chiefly them that walk after the flesh in the lust of uncleanness, and despise government: presumptuous are they, self-willed, they are not afraid to speak evil of dignities, 2 Pet. ii. 10. a But they shall proceed no further: for their folly shall be manifest unto all men, as their's also was.

VER. 11.

Τοῖς διωγμοῖς, τοῖς παθήμασιν, οἷά μοι ἐγένετο ἐν ̓Αντιοχείᾳ, ἐν Ἰκονίῳ, ἐν Λύστροις· οἷους διωγμοὺς ὑπήνεγκα, καὶ ἐκ πάντων με ἐῤῥύσατο ὁ Κύριος.

But the Jews stirred up the devout and honourable women, and the chief men of the city, and raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and expelled them out of their coasts. But they shook off the dust of their feet against them, and came unto Iconium, Acts xiii. 50, 51. And it came to pass in Iconium, that they went. both together into the synagogue of the Jews, and so spake, that a great multitude, both of the Jews and also of the Greeks, believed. But the unbelieving Jews stirred up the Gentiles, and made their minds evil-affected against the brethren, xiv. 1, 2. But the multitude of the city was divided : and part held with the Jews, and part with the apostles. And when there was an assault made, both of the Gentiles and also of the Jews, with their rulers, to use them despitefully, and to stone them. They were ware
