Fleetly and joyously to flow along,
As flow the wavelets of a flower-lipp'd stream, Glancing in playfulness from stone to stone, And brightening each with lustre not his own.
Yes, they were gay with many a rosy joy: For many a radiant dream of hope and love, Which sorrow might not break nor care destroy, A circle of delight around me wove.
The silver links which bound my heart to gladness, Were long, ere sever'd by the hand of sadness.
My house was where the blue Egean sea Murmur'd of pleasure to the sun-lit shore! Where, from the scented lime and myrtle tree, Each breeze upon its wing sweet odours bore, And, underneath the sheltering plane that grew Beside our threshold, many a glowing hue, Of violet, rosy red, and green,
Of glossy bay, or silvery olive, blent
In bright confusion: while half hid, half seen, The cluster'd grape and golden orange sent
Their brilliance through the veiling leaves; and met The last look of the sun before he set.-Lethe.
My aged parents too! whose closing years
Were peaceful as their lives had always been:
Their day went calmly down, undimm'd by tears, Like summer evening placidly serene.-Ib.
A Battle-Field with the Persians.
The arrows flew around us, thick as hail:
War-cries innumerous drown'd the trumpet's clang: Helmets were cleft: and, on the strong man's mail, The sword and scy metar re-echoing rang:
And many a stately crest and casque of proof
Lay, trampled in the dust, beneath the charger's hoof.—Ib.
The Worth of Stoicism to the Afflicted!
Cold heartless creed! It was not made for those, Whose heart-strings thrill to every soft emotion.
It freezes feeling, like the mountain-snows, It dries the springs of lofty self-devotion,
It strips existence of its loveliest charm ;
And gives instead a false and hollow calm.-Ib.
Our specimen-basket will hold no more at once. We must collect some more for another Number.
