daughters of the Lord Almighty; then shall the love of Christ constrain us to live not unto ourselves, but to him who died for us; then shall we find his cross easy, and his burden light; then shall we no longer serve thee as a slave but as a father; then shall we run in the way of thy commandments when thou hast enlarged our hearts.

When we have new hearts, and a right spirit, all things will be new; with a new nature we shall hate sin, and holiness will be our delight; thy commandments will be the rejoicing of our hearts, and thy word sweet unto our taste: thy statutes will be our song in the house of our pilgrimage, and thy testimonies, which we would choose for an heritage for ever, be always the rejoicing of our hearts. Set up thy throne in our hearts, write thy law there, plant thy fear there, and fill us with all the graces of thy Spirit, that we may abound in the fruits of righteousness to the glory and praise of God.

Mortify our pride, and clothe us with humility; put upon us the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price. Save us from the power of a vain mind, and let thy grace be mighty in us that we may be serious and sober minded. Let the love of the world be rooted out of us, and let the love of God in Christ be rooted

in us. O that, with a new heart, we may put on the Lord Jesus: his purity, his humility, and his love, as becomes the followers of that Saviour who gave us this new commandment, that we love one another even as he loved us. Give us grace to live a life of communion with thee, both in ordinances and providences, trusting in thee at all times, and pouring out our hearts before thee, and at all times rejoicing in thy love; and while we are here, make us wiser and better every day; more holy, heavenly, and spiritual, that our last days may be our best days, our last works our best works, and our last comforts our sweetest comforts. That, having put on the Lord Jesus here, we may be placed at last among those whom he has redeemed by his blood, and sanctified by his spirit. Now to him who loved us, and gave himself for us, to him be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

HYMN.

Is this the kind return,

And these the thanks we owe;
Thus to forget eternal love,

Whence all our blessings flow?

To what a stubborn frame,
Has sin reduc'd our mind ;
What strange rebellious wretches we,
And God as strangely kind.

On us he bids the sun
Shed his reviving rays,

For us the skies their circles run,
To lengthen out our days.

The brutes obey their God,
And bow their necks to men,

But we more base, more brutish things,
Refuse his easy reign.

Turn, turn us, mighty God,

And mould our souls afresh,

Break, sov'reign grace, these hearts of stone,
And give us hearts of flesh.

Let past ingratitude,

Provoke our weeping eyes,

And hourly as new mercies fall,
Let hourly thanks arise.

PRAYER

For Friday Evening.

Father of mercies, and God of all comfort, accept our praise and thanksgiving for the blessings of this day. Blessed be thy name for that light which no darkness overspreads,

that sun which never goes down! Jesus is our resurrection and our life, grant that our souls may rise to newness of life; granting us repentance from dead works, and planting us in the likeness of his resurrection. O thou Father and God of peace, who didst bring again from the dead our Lord Jesus Christ, that great shepherd of the sheep through the blood of the everlasting covenant, make us perfect in every good work to do thy will, working in us that which is well pleasing in thy sight through Jesus Christ.

Glory be unto thee, O Lord, there is no condemnation to them who are in Christ Jesus; O for thy mercy's sake bring our souls into this happy state, and give us a longing desire to enjoy the felicity of thy chosen. O may this salvation be experienced by every soul before thee. May we all find it a present salvation, delivering us from every false hope; from the love of sin, the love of the world, and the lusts of the flesh teach us to pass through this present evil world as strangers and pilgrims, who have no continuing city here, and are sèeking one to come.

:

Thou hast taught us by thy word that if any man have not the spirit of Christ, ke is none of his :-and thou hast encouraged us to pray for the same. Hear our unworthy

petitions, O Father of mercies, and bestow upon us this unspeakable gift, that we may walk not after the flesh, but after the spirit, and that our conversation may be such as becometh the gospel :-that we may mortify the deeds of the body, and subdue the unholy desires of our corrupt nature, and that we may discharge every duty incumbent upon us, according to thy word. Give us grace to lay aside every weight and the sin which easily besets us: and let us run with patience the heavenly race, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith. Gracious Lord, be thou our strength, and enable us to contend faithfully with the world, the flesh, and the devil. Teach us our own depravity, and the exceeding sinfulness of sin; teach us the deceitfulness of our hearts, that we may be truly humbled before thee, and that we may be stirred up to a greater earnestness in the work of our salvation. May we never cease to cry-Lord, save or we perish! Let us never lay down our arms but with our lives. Arm us this day with the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the spirit; that we may ever hold fast the blessed hope of eternal life.
