spoken of thy Son in the Scriptures. O give us the spirit of wisdom and revelation in the knowledge of him; of his person and his offices; of his love and power, towards all that hear his voice and follow him; that so we may abound in clear, magnificent, and endearing thoughts of Jesus Christ our Lord; that he may be precious to us as he was to the glorious company of the Apostles, and the noble army of martyrs. Thou, O God, hast declared that thy Son shall be exalted and extolled, and shall be very high: help us, we earnestly pray thee, to give him this honour, day by day more perfectly. Enable us to comprehend with all saints, the immeasurable extent of his love; in its breadth and length, its height and depth.

Grant, O Lord, that the Saviour's love to us may be the pattern of ours to all that are round about us: may this love deliver us from all unkindness, from all envyings, strife, and uncharitableness. Make us kind and tender-hearted; forbearing one another, and forgiving one another, as thou, for Christ's sake, art ready to forgive us. Banish from our dwellings all variance and evil surmisings. Let peace and gentleness, meekness and goodness, be exercised by all of us, one towards another, and the only contention in our family be, who shall conform most to

the will of God, by abounding in brotherly kindness and fervent charity. Thou, God, that makest men to be of one mind that dwell together, inspire us with the spirit of concord, and subdue all our selfish tempers, that our prayers be not hindered. O'that the Lord Jesus may be always in our thoughts, and in our hearts, that we may make him our pattern, as he is our hope.

O that nothing may be so dear to us, in this world, as his holiness, his humility, his goodness and charity, his meekness and patience, his entire trust in thee, and resignation to thee, his delight to do thy will, 0 God; in hope of that eternal life, which thou, who canst not lie, has promised to us. Fix our minds and affections more steadfastly on that glory wherewith he is crowned, by his obedient suffering of death, that we may never be weary, nor faint in our minds, but continuing faithful to death, may also receive the crown of life. We commit to thee this day, both soul and body, beseeching thee to increase our love to thee, and to all men, till we are fit to be translated to the region of love and joy, through Jesus Christ; where the harmony of love and praise shall never be interrupted by sins, or griefs, or fears, or discord; but shall be everlastingly perfect to

our joy and to thy glory, through our glorified Mediator. Amen.

HYMN.

Jesus, I love thy charming name,
'Tis music to my ear;

Fain would I sound it so loud,

That earth and heav'n should hear.

Yes, thou art precious to my soul,
My transport, and my trust;
Jewels to thee are gaudy toys,
And gold is sordid dust.

All my capacious powers can wish,
In thee doth richly meet;
Nor to mine eyes is light so dear,
Nor friendship half so sweet.

Thy grace still dwells upon my heart,
And sheds its fragrance there;
The noblest balm of all its wounds,
The cordial of its care.

I'll speak the honours of thy name,
With my last labouring breath;
And may the music of thy name,
Refresh
my soul in death.

PRAYER

For Thursday Evening.

O most High and Holy One, who inhabitest eternity, and art God over all, blessed

for evermore! happy are they who stand continually in thy presence, and are always admiring, loving, and obeying thee, and rejoicing in thy love and favour. Thou art worthy, O Lord, to receive from us, and from the whole world, blessing, and honour, and glory, and power, for thou art great and greatly to be praised. All the host of heaven continually praise thee; and so ought all the church on earth, saying, "Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, which is, which was, and is to come!"

There is none holy as the Lord.

"Thou

art righteous in all thy ways, and holy in all thy works." "Thou lovest righteousness, and hatest iniquity." "The earth is thine, and the fulness thereof, the world and they that dwell therein." "The heavens declare the glory of God, the firmament sheweth his handy-work." Praised be thy sovereign goodness, which spreads itself over all thy works! "O Lord how manifold are thy works; in wisdom hast thou made them all; and they all wait on thee, that thou mayest give thein their meat in due season." "Thou openest thine hand, they are filled with good." O how much have we to say of the goodness of the Lord by our own experience; how sweet and how wonderful is it to recount all the instances of thy patience with us, and thy

bounty to us! In the day of trouble thou hast been our defence and our refuge. In our distress we cried unto thee, and thou hast enlarged us. Blessed be God, who hath not cast away our prayer, nor his mercy from us. When our feet have slipped, thy mercy, O Lord, held us up; and when we were far off, thou hast brought us nigh. "O the height, the depth, the length of thy love in Christ Jesus. "" That thou shouldest "so love the world as to give thy well-beloved Son," to make peace for us through the blood of his cross. Blessed be thy name for all the means whereby we have been led to the knowledge of thy great love in Christ Jesus, which passeth knowledge. We glorify thee, O Heavenly Father, if thou hast "shined into our hearts to give us the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ." Glory be to thee, O God, for the gracious visitations of thy Holy Spirit, enlightening our minds, drawing our will towards thee, exciting in us holy desires, and forming pious purposes and resolutions in our hearts; giving us a taste how gracious thou art, and setting before us the hopes of eternal life. Who can utter the mighty acts of the Lord, who can shew forth all his praise? How often hast thou spared us when we deserved thine anger! How many dangers have we
