course, certainly, considering the madness he is guilty of, as the committee's manager, in endeavouring to play tragedies with only one or two tragedians; comedy, with a brace of comedians; and opera, with a quiet quintette. No one will be irrational enough to doubt that Bedlam is an asylum to which that individual should be consigued, who dreams of playing such fantastic tricks in these days when your public will, and very properly too, have its money's worth. Then again, the mistake in bringing forward a pantomime destitute of fun-that in itself is an act of lunacy joined in by others, but which the managers over the water have been convinced of; for at the SURREY they have a pantomime with some of the ingredients that formerly characterized this species of entertainment. Now, looking at the stage as it is, no one can be found to find fault with the manager of the MARIONETTE THEATRE, who, in the selection of opportunity, and in the observance of a proper regard to mise en scène, has happily re-introduced Puppets. A rather short list for the Derby must be taken with this commentary, that almost every one found in it can be reported favourably of. The odds about the crack- -a point less than we left him last month-are "taken freely," as they are about Augur; while Lord Ribblesdale's pair yet look better and better. Claverhouse, again, may be announced as quite recovered; and John Day's party are significantly sweet on "the guineas" horse Filius. Womersley and Elcot, perhaps, are not very generally inquired after; but there is nothing to be said against them, and the thirty to one about Home-brewed has plenty of takers. The chief feature of the month, however, has been the advance of Orelio, after some considerable whispering and threatening. He is affirmed to be the finest three-year-old seen for a long day, especially blest with most wonderful quarters, and in the opinion of his stable a far better horse than their last year winner. The price we now put him at is hardly to be obtained, and he has every promise of being a yet better favourite. The Ring have scarcely yet forgotten the punishment they had to stand up to; and lo! here is another of them. An unusually satisfactory handicap for the Chester Cup, has resulted so far in making the last winner first favourite for it, despite the steadier opposite her. The public are taking to her very kindly; and Ariosto, High Sheriff, and Scarecrow have also much real support. defer any table of prices on this race till the declarations are out; We and have treated the Metropolitan in the same manner-the latter since the publication of the Chester handicap almost shelved.
