Lowell Mason, 1832

I Thy home is with the hum- ble, Lord; The sim-plest are

the best;

Thy lodg-ing is in

child-like hearts; Thou makest there Thy rest. A MEN.

2 Dear Comforter, eternal Love,
If Thou wilt stay with me,
Of lowly thoughts and simple ways
I'll build a house for Thee.

3 Who made this beating heart of mine
But Thou, my heavenly Guest?
Let no one have it, then, but Thee,
And let it be Thy rest.

Rev. Frederick W. Faber, 1849: verse 1, ll. 2, 4, verse 2, l. 4, verse 3, 1. 4, alt.

Arr. from Christopher Tye, 1553

I How precious is the book Di- vine, By in - spi - ra

tion given:

Bright as a lamp its doc-trines shine, To guide our souls to heaven. A-MEN.

2 It sweetly cheers our drooping hearts, 3 This lamp, through all the tedious night

In this dark vale of tears;

Life, light, and joy it still imparts,

And quells our rising fears.

Of life, shall guide our way,
Till we behold the clearer light

Of an eternal day.

Rev. John Fawcett, 1782

Who its truth believeth Light and joy receiv eth.

A - MEN.

2 When our foes are near us,
Then Thy word doth cheer us;
Word of consolation,
Message of salvation.

3 When the storms are o'er us,
And dark clouds before us,
Then its light directeth,
And our way protecteth.

ORTONVILLE C. M.

4 Word of mercy, giving
Succor to the living ;
Word of life, supplying
Comfort to the dying!

5 O that we, discerning
Its most holy learning,
Lord, may love and fear Thee,
Evermore be near Thee.

William F. Sherwin, 1877

I Break Thou the bread of life, Dear Lord, to me, As

I seek Thee, Lord; My spirit pants for Thee, O living Word. A-MEN.

2 Bless Thou the truth, dear Lord, To me-to me

As Thou didst bless the bread
By Galilee ;

I THE Spirit breathes upon the word, And brings the truth to sight; Precepts and promises afford

A sanctifying light.

2 A glory gilds the sacred page,

Majestic, like the sun :

It gives a light to every age;
It gives, but borrows none.

3 The Hand that gave it still supplies The gracious light and heat:

Then shall all bondage cease,

All fetters fall;

And I shall find my peace,
My All in all.

Mary Ann Lathbury, 1877

His truths upon the nations rise;
They rise, but never set.

4 Let everlasting thanks be Thine
For such a bright display

As makes a world of darkness shine With beams of heavenly day.

5 My soul rejoices to pursue

The steps of Him I love, Till glory break upon my view In brighter worlds above.

William Cowper, 1779

Lowell Mason, 1830

I The heavens de-clare Thy glo - ry, Lord; In

every star Thy wisdom shines;

But when our eyes be - hold Thy word, We read Thy Name in fair - er lines. A-MEN.

2 The rolling sun, the changing light,
And nights and days, Thy power con-
fess s;

But the blest volume Thou hast writ
Reveals Thy justice and Thy grace.

3 Sun, moon, and stars convey Thy praise
Round the whole earth, and never
stand;

So when Thy truth began its race,
It touched and glanced on every land.

4 Nor shall Thy spreading gospel rest Till through the world Thy truth has

run;

Till Christ has all the nations blest
That see the light, or feel the sun.
5 Great Sun of Righteousness, arise;
Bless the dark world with heavenly
light:

Thy gospel makes the simple wise,
Thy laws are pure, Thy judgments right.

The Church

128 (THE SEVEN WORDS)

I JESUS, with Thy Church abide,
Be her Saviour, Lord, and Guide,
While on earth her faith is tried:
We beseech Thee, hear us.

2 Keep her life and doctrine pure;
Grant her patience to endure,
Trusting in Thy promise sure:

We beseech Thee, hear us.

7.7.7. 6.

Rev. Isaac Watts, 1719

4 May her lamp of truth be bright,
Bid her bear aloft its light
Through the realms of heathen night:
We beseech Thee, hear us.

5 May she holy triumphs win,
Overthrow the hosts of sin,
Gather all the nations in:

We beseech Thee, hear us.
6 May she soon all glorious be,
Spotless and from wrinkle free,
Pure and bright and worthy Thee:
We beseech Thee, hear us.
Rev. Thomas B. Pollock, 1871: alt. Hy. Anc. and Mod. 1875

3 Save her love from growing cold,
Make her watchmen strong and bold,
Fence her round, Thy peaceful fold:
We beseech Thee, hear us.
