And Jefus faid unto him, Judas, betrayeft thou the Son of man with a kifs!

Then they laid hands on Jefus, and took him, and delivered him to Pontius Pilate the governor.

TABLE. VIII.

Chrift delivered to the Jews to be crucified. AND when the morning was come,the chief priests accufed him of many things, but he answered nothing.

From that time Pilate fought to releafe him, but the Jews cried out, If thou let this man go, thou art not Cæfar's friend.

Then delivered he Jefus unto them to crucify him and they led him away to a place called Golgotha.

:

There did they crucify him, and parted his garments, cafting lots; that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophets, They parted my raiment among them, and upon my vefture did they caft lots.

And about the ninth hour, Jefus criéd with a loud voice, faying, My God, my God, why haft thou forfaken me? And when Jefus had cried again, he yielded up the ghost..

And behold, the vail of the temple was rent in twain, from the top to the bottom, and the earth did quake, and the rocks rent.

Christ's refurrection declared.

As it began to dawn, towards the firft day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary, to fee the fepulchre.

And behold, the angel of the Lord defcended from heaven, and came and rolled back the ftone from the door, and fat upon it.

And the angel anfwered and faid unto the women, Fear not ye, for I know that ye feek Jefus who was crucified.

He is not here, for he is rifen, as he faid. Come fee the place where the Lord lay.

And go quickly, and tell his difciples that he is rifen from the dead, and behold, he goeth before you into Galilee, there fhall ye fee him, lo, I have told.

you.

And they departed quickly from the fepulchre, with fear and great joy, and did run to bring the difciples word.

Chrift appeareth to his difciples after his refurrection.

AND as they went to tell his difciples, behold, Jefus met them, saying, All hail, and they came and held him by the feet, and worshipped him.

And Jefus faid unto them, Be not afraid go tell my brethren, that they go into Galilee, and there fhall they fee me.

Then the eleven difciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jefus had appointed them.

And when they faw him, they worfhipped him: but fome doubted.

And Jefus fpake unto them, faying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.

Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, of the Son, and of the Holy Ghoft.

Teaching them to obferve all things whatfoever I have commanded you, and, lo, I am with you alway, even to the end of the world. Amen.

ET children that would fear the Lord,

L' Hear what their teachers fay ;

With reverence meet their parents' word,
And with delight obey.

Have you not heard what dreadful plagues
Are threat'ned by the Lord,

[ocr errors]

To him that breaks his father's law,

Or mocks his mother's word.

III.

What heavy guilt upon him lies;
How curfed is his name;
The ravens fhall pick out his eyes,
And cagles eat the fame.

IV.

But thofe who worship God, and give

Their parents honour due;

Here on this earth they long fhall live,.
And live hereafter too.

Against Lying.

'TIS a lovely thing for youth

To walk betimes in wifdom's way;

To fear a lie, to fpeak the truth,
That we may truft to all they fay.

[ocr errors]

But liars we can never truft,

Though they should fpeak the thing that's true: And they who do one fault at first,

And lie to hide it, make it two.

Have ye not known, nor heard, nor read,

How God abhors deceit and wrong? How Ananias was truck dead,

Caught with a lie upon his tongue? So did his wife Sapphira die,

When he came in and grew fo bold, As to confirm that wicked lie,

Which just before her husband told !
The Lord delights in those who speak
The word of truth; but wilful lies
The fatal confequence must meet,

Which from deceit and falfehood rife.
Then let me always watch my lips,
And guard my tongue and temper well,
Since God a book of reck'ning keeps
For ev'ry lie which children tell.

A Morning Hymn.

J.

OD makes the glorious fun to know

G His proper hour to rife ;

And to give light to all below,

Doth fend him round the fkies.

II.

When from the chambers of the east,
His morning race begins;

He never tires, nor ftops to reft,

But round the world he fhines.
