Land where none can make afraid,
Where the laws must be obeyed;
Land of freedom, homes, and peace,
Never may its blessings cease.

Lord, may we improve aright,
All its blessings, all its light,
Honour to our parents give,
So in it we long may live.

291.

TEMPTATION AND REPENTANCE.

The Roaring Lion.

THERE'S a lion always near,
Watching on your soul to fly,
But he hides himself for fear
You should see his cruel eye.
At your work and at your play,
He is ever by your side;
To your home he finds his way,
In God's very house he'll hide.

When your Saviour you forget,
When you trifle with God's law,
Then your foe is crouching set,
Ready with his dreadful paw.

O, your souls to Christ belong!
Pray that he your guard will be ;
If you turn from what is wrong,
He will make this lion flee.

(7's.)

292. Whence cometh Temptation?

LET no man say, when he is tempted,
I am tempted of God:

For God cannot be tempted with evil,
Neither tempteth He any man:

But every man is tempted,

When he is drawn away of his own lust and enticed.

Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil and he will flee from you. Draw nigh to God, and He will draw nigh to you.-James i. 13; iv. 7.

293. Repent: for why will ye die?(s. M.)

THE Saviour kindly saith And whispers in His Word, Arise, and put not off till death,

But haste ye to the Lord.

And if you know not how
The Lord would have you run,
Leave off your sins-amend e'en now,
The evils you have done.

And if you would repent,
Pluck sin up by the root,

And henceforth let your life be spent
To bring forth worthy fruit.

294. How and where shall we be safe?

BE sober, be vigilant;

Because your adversary the devil, as a roaring lion,

Walketh about, seeking whom he may devour:

Whom resist, stedfast in the faith.

An highway shall be there, and a way, And it shall be called The way of holiness; The unclean shall not pass over it:

No lion shall be there,

Nor any ravenous beast shall go up thereon; But the redeemed shall walk there.

1 Peter v. 8, 9; Isaiah xxxv. 8, 9.

295.Not joyous at present, but grievous.(7's.)
FOLLY in a child is bound,
Clinging to his heart around;
Born within and hedged about,
"Tis the rod must drive it out.

Much indulgence makes a child
Hasty, masterful, and wild,
But correction makes him wise,
Turns away from sin his eyes.

There are plagues within his heart,
From its folly t'will not part,
This each tender parent knows,
And in love reproof bestows.

Oh, if children did but know,
How each sin must end in woe,
Their own passions they would cross,
To escape eternal loss.

296.

The Bondage of Sin.

(C. M.)

WHEN we were brought to Christ at first

We promised to repent,

And wholly trust in Him who once

To save our souls was sent.

Unless we turn in heart and life,

We cannot be forgiven;
Unless we fix on Christ our hope,
We cannot enter heaven.

While we continue doing wrong,
How can we say we grieve?
Whoe'er is sorry for their sin,
Will try all sin to leave.

It was to save us from our sins
The Saviour had to die,
But if we will not give them up,
We from our Saviour fly.

SICKNESS AND SORROW.

297. The Sick Child's Hymn.

(L. M.)

O HEAVENLY Father, hear my cry,
Thou dwellest far beyond the sky,
But yet I know that Thou art near,
Thy suffering child's complaint to hear.
I mourn because I am so ill,
But I am sure it is Thy will;

O grant me an obedient mind,
My comfort in Thy will to find.
I pray Thee take my pain away,
But more for patience would I pray,
To bear that pain, if Thou dost see
That it will do some good to me.

All must be good which Thou dost send
And meant to bless me in the end,
So, whether I am well or ill,

I'll try to love and praise Thee still.

298. Hezekiah's Hymn after Sickness.

I SAID I shall go to the gates of the grave:

O Lord, I am oppressed; | un der | take · for me.

What shall I say:

He hath both spoken unto me, and Him | self hath done | it.

[ocr errors]

I shall go softly | all my years:

In the bitterness of my soul.

[ocr errors]

O Lord, by these things men | live : And in all these things is the | life of my | spirit.

So wilt Thou recover me, and make me to live:

[ocr errors]

For Thou hast cast all my | sins be | hind, thy | back.

The living the living:

He shall praise Thee, as I do

this | day.

Isaiah xxxviii. 10-19.
