299. God heareth a Child's Cry. (7's.)

O, MY Saviour, Thou didst heal
All the sick who came to Thee;
Now my sorrows Thou dost feel,—
In my sickness pity me.

Humbly unto Thee I pray,

Thou canst ease me, though distrest;
Thou canst take my pain away,
Thou canst give me sleep and rest.

Thou Thyself wast once a child,
Thou hast suffered anguish sore,
Make me grateful, patient, mild,
Never fretful any more.

If my sickness still should last,
Well I know 'tis from Thy love :
If my life is almost past,

Fit me for Thyself above.

300. Be not far from me, O Lord. (C. M.)

O LORD, how gracious is thine ear
To listen to our grief;

Thou knowest all our troubles here,
And Thou canst send relief.

Thou knowest well how weak and frail

Our cottages of clay;

If Thou but touch them, lo! they fail,
And moulder fast away.

In every faint and painful hour
Christ shall be round our bed;
Supporting by his gracious power,
Our drooping heart and head.

O soft and patient make our mind,
Then grief will not be vain ;
For in affliction we shall find
Some everlasting gain.

DEATH AND AFTER DEATH.

I HEARD a voice from heaven, saying unto me, Write, From henceforth blessed are the dead which die in the Lord even so, saith the Spirit, for they rest from their labours.

301. Christ hath abolished Death. (7's.)
PRAISE, O praise the Saviour's name,
To abolish death he came !

Death's strong grasp no man can flee,
Jesus Christ hath set us free! Alleluia !

Though our bodies still must die,

For a while in dust to lie ;

Soon shall all creation shake;

Christ shall bid our dust awake! Alleluia !

Joyful shall that morning be,

All the earth our God shall see ;
We shall be caught up on high,
Never, never more to die! Alleluia !

We shall see as we are seen;
Washed by Christ we shall be clean:
Now,- -ere life doth pass away,

Live ye for that glorious day! Alleluia!

302.

The Judgment Day.

I SAW the dead, small and great, stand before God;

And the books were opened:

And another book was opened, which is the book of life:

And the dead were judged

Out of those things which were written in the books,

According to their works.

And the sea gave up the dead which were in it;

And death and hell delivered up the dead which were in them:

And they were judged

Every man according to their works.

And whosoever was not found written in

the book of life

Was cast into the lake of fire.

Rev. xx. 12, 13, 15.

303. The Heavens shall depart as a Scroll.

THE Lord himself

Shall descend from heaven with a shout,

With the voice of the archangel,

And with the trump of God:

And the dead in Christ shall rise first :
Then we which are alive and remain,
Shall be caught up together with them in
the clouds,

To meet the Lord in the air;

And so shall we ever be with the Lord. Wherefore comfort one another with these words.-1 Thess. iv. 16.

304.

Life will not wait for us.

As the winged arrow flies,
Speedily the mark to find;

As the lightning through the skies
Darts and leaves no trace behind.

Swiftly thus our fleeting days,
Bear us down life's rapid stream;
Upwards, Lord, our spirits raise,
All below is but a dream.

Thanks for mercies past receive,
Pardon of our sins renew;
Teach us henceforth how to live,
With eternity in view.

Bless thy word to young and old,
Fill us with the Saviour's love;
And when life's short tale is told,
May we dwell with Thee above.

(7's.)

305. Enoch's Prophecy of Judgment Day. BEHOLD, the Lord cometh !

With ten thousand of his saints,

To execute judgment upon all,

And to convince all that are ungodly among them

Of all their ungodly deeds

Which they have ungodly committed,
And of all their hard speeches

Which ungodly sinners have spoken against

him.

Jude 14, 15.

(C. M.)

306. The Books were opened.

AT the Great Day, when you shall stand

Before the judgment-seat,

With quick and dead on every hand,

The eye of God to meet,

Then shall the Books be opened wide,
And every heart shall read,
Written by God before they died,

Each thought and word and deed.

Each idle word, each lie you've told,
Each wicked thing you've done,
Your trembling conscience shall behold,
Though here 'twere known to none.
Now, while there's hope, your sins forsake,
Which grieve the Lord on high;
And pray that He, for Jesus' sake,
Would blot them ere you die !
