307. Taken from the Evil to come. (C.M.)
O LORD, though early Thou dost call
Thy lamb to Thee above;
Yet well we know thy dealings all
Do flow from only love.

To keep thy lamb from sin and woe,
And guard it safe from harms;
To spare its griefs which reign below,
Thou tak'st it to thine arms.

"Tis on thy tender bosom laid,
And knows no sorrow there;
"Tis by a heav'nly parent fed,
And needs no more our care.
To earth the child was only lent;
While living, still 'twas thine;
Unto its Father's house 'tis sent,
In spotless robes to shine.

308.

Not dead, but gone to Heaven.
WHY, O mother, will you weep?
Baby is but lulled asleep;
There it lies, and feels no more
All the pains it felt before.
All is silent-cries are fled-
"Tis but still-it is not dead.-
Like a violet, faded here,
It will bloom another year!
"Tis in heaven with God on high!
It will meet us when we die.

Why, O mother, will you weep?
Baby is but lulled asleep;

Never can it feel a pain,

And it cannot die again!

309.A Companion gone to bear witness.(C.M.)

SILENT and dead our playmate lies—
His time on earth is o'er;
And now the place that knew him once,
Shall never know him more.

His spirit has returned to God,
His body to the dust,

Until the day when all shall rise,
The wicked and the just.

Both he and we have been baptized,
And unto Jesus given;
Now he is gone, and we are left,

To run our race to heaven.

When the Great Day comes on, what tale

Shall he and conscience tell,

How he has seen us live on earth

O, was it ill, or well?

310.

Be ye followers of me.

O! THAT loud and solemn bell,
Echoing heavy on the heart,
Has a sorrowing tale to tell,
Grief in which we have a part.

[ocr errors]

(7's.)

Has a father or a friend,
One who loved us, passed away?
Their kind care is at an end,
We are left behind to-day!

Is our teacher called to rest-
One who led our steps to God,
Roused religion in our breast,
Anxious watched the ways we trod?

We must meet them once again,
O where shall that meeting be?
Was their love for us in vain ?
Help us, Lord, to walk with Thee!

311.The Difference between Soul and Body.

ALL go unto one place;

All are of the dust, and all turn to dust again.

Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward;

And the spirit of the beast that goeth downwards to the earth?

Man goeth to his long home,

And the mourners go about the streets.
Then shall the dust return

To the earth as it was:

And the spirit shall return

Unto God who gave it.

Eccles. iii. 20, 21, and xii. 5, 7.

(PRAYER.

Thou art not able to walk in the commandments of God and to serve Him, without his special grace: which thou must learn at all times to call for by diligent prayer.

312.Evening and Morning will I pray. (7’s.)
WHAT is praying-can you tell?
Have you ever thought it o'er ?
Lips may speak the words right well,
But there needeth something more.
What you ask within your heart,
Wishing God to give, or do,

That's your prayer: the speaking part
Oft is empty, or not true.

When you kneel and say your prayers,
In God's house or when alone,

O remember God is there,

Even your thoughts to Him are known.

And I hope you often pray,

When there's none to see or hear:
At your work, your walk, your play,
Lift your heart, for God is near.

313.

I know not how to pray.

A LITTLE child I bend my knee,
Lord, teach me how to pray,

And draw my infant heart to Thee,
And wash my sins away.

(C. M.)

For I was born with sinful heart,
I sin each day I live,

And I can have in heaven no part
But what thy grace shall give.

But Christ in mercy came and sought
Thy flock that were astray,

And I have been baptized and brought
To Thee in thine own way.

And since

upon the cross he died,

That I might be forgiven, O never let me turn aside, But fit my soul for heaven.

314. The Spirit of Grace and Supplication.

I WILL pray with the spirit,

And I will pray with the understanding also. I will sing with the spirit,

And I will sing with the understanding also. What things soever ye desire, when ye pray, Believe that ye receive them, and ye shall have them.

In everything, by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving,

Let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God which passeth all understanding

Shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
