of Jefus Chrift.

Spirits, John the Baptift, and John the E-
vangelift: both agreeing in this, To ad-
vance the Honor of Jefus Chrift. John
the Baptift is brought in by John the E-
vangelift, giving (as you reade in this
firft Chapter) Four great Teftimonies

The firft begins at the 15. verse, John bare Witneß of Him and cryed, faying, This is He of whom I pake. Wherein Jobn the Baptift doth prefer Jefus Chrift above himself; both

in regard of His Perfon, and regard of His Office; In regard of His P erfon, as you reade in the latter end of the 15th, This was He of whom I pake, He that cometh after me, is preferred before me.

In regard of His Office, at the 16, the 17, and 18. verfes: And of His Fulneß have all we received, even Grace for Grace. For the Law ws given by Mofes, but Grace and Truth came by Jefus Chrift, &c.

I confefs there are Learned Interpreters, as Cyril, and Chryfoftome, that do conceive the words of my Text, to be the words if John the Evangelift: the 15. verfe, having (as they fay relation unto Johns fpeech in the latter end of the 14. verfe, Full of Grace and Truth.

But Origen and others (anto whom I rather incline) think that they are the words of John the Baptift; becaufe they are knit unto the former by the copulative And: And, of bis Fulneß have all we received, Grace for Grace. He therefore that fpake the words of the former verfe, in all likelyhood fpake thefe words: He that spake the words of the former verfe was John the Baptift, and therfore these words being linked unto the former by the word, And, in all likelyhood are the words of John the Baptift.

The Words of themfelves fall into these Three Propofitions.

First, That there is a Fulneß of Grace in Jefus Chrift,

Secondly, That of this Fulneß, we have all received.

Thirdly, That we have all received, even Grace for Grace.

There is a great Controverfy upon the latter Claufe, what should be meant by thofe Words, Even Grace for Grace: But because the Determination thereof fall properly within the compafs of the Third Propofition, and will have little influence upon the first, which I intend (God willing) to speak unto at this time; therefore I pass by
