Odes, Masses, &c.

ALL REDUCED to 1s. 6d or 2s. each.

MESSRS. NOVELLO AND CO. are now issuing Centenary editions of Handel's Oratorios and Cantatas, complete, in Vocal Score, for 1s. 6d. or 2s. each, and portions of them at the cost of a few pence.

When these Octavo editions were first printed in 1846, nothing of the kind had ever been attempted; and, from the very small prices charged, their commercial success was deemed by competent authorities to be far from hopeful. It might have been so, but that an extended use for these books was invented at the same time-viz., the use of such books by the AUDIENCE, instead of being confined, as previously, to the PERFORMERS. Novello's editions were also the first type works which had the words (or text) of a proportionate size to the music, so that both could be conveniently read at the same distance from the eye.

These causes combined to give the Octavos a success far beyond the most sanguine expectations of the designer; the number of complete Oratorios, Masses, and Cantatas, has been constantly increased, comprehending works of more limited demand, besides other octavo collections of Glees, Part-Songs, Anthems, &c. Since 1846, the Public have been admitted to the benefit of this success, by a reduction in price of the most popular works in 1854; and now, by an issue of ALL the Octavo Oratorios in paper covers, at 1s. 6d. or 2s. each. Novello and Co. may also cite the reduction (in 1848-9) of full 50 per cent. in price, throughout their extensive Catalogue of classical compositions, as proof of their determination to foster and cultivate the musical taste of a rising generation, and thus, by anticipating, create a want which their publications were so well able to supply.

NOVELLO AND CO. believe that the Public, who have watched the progress of these inventions, and their influence upon the diffusion of Art, have seen with disgust the bald imitations put forth with unscrupulous assertions, by those publishers who are not ashamed to appropriate to themselves the ideas of the originators, when there appears to be no risk in doing so, because it is evident that the reduplication of servile copies of works already accessible confers no new benefit on Musical progress; and they feel most grateful for the steady support their publications have continued to receive from all grades of Musical Society throughout Great Britain, the Colonies, and America.

GTM Each Work is complete, and printed in the same style as formerly, and on the
SAME QUALITY OF PAPER as that hitherto used for Novello's
Octavo Edition of Oratorios.

Specimen pages and lists of the works in Novello's Octavo Series may be had gratis on application, or sent post-free for one stamp.
