ant entrance into the glorious and everlasting kingdom of my Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, from the riches of thy mercy in him. Amen,

A PRAYER FOR TUESDAY EVENING.

My Father in heaven, at the close of another day I retire from the world to converse with thee. I dismiss my distracting cares to meditate on thy perfections, which are subject to no change or decay; on thy power which no exertions can weaken; on thy bounty 'which no communications of good can exhaust; on thy patience which our provocations do not weary; and on thy mercy which still waiteth to be gracious. I withdraw into my secret retirement to repose my hope with thee, my preserver and benefactor, my God and portion. Thy mercies are new to me every morning, and thy faithfulness every

evening. Day unto day uttereth this speech, that thou art good unto all. Night unto night sheweth this knowledge, that thy watchful eye is never taken off from us, and that thy goodness never faileth.

The day which has now been added to my life, and all my past days, have borne testimony to thy great, undeserved and constant goodness. I adore thee as my former and creator. I praise thee for every instance of thy providential care and kindness, from the beginning of life to this moment. I praise thee for all the necessaries, conveniences and comforts which thy liberal hands have provided, to render my passage through this state agreeable to myself and useful to those around I thank thee and praise thee for all those advantages which I daily derive from the instructions and example, the ministry and sufferings, the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ, the ambassador of thy mercy to a sinful world. May every review of thy rich and abounding mercies tune my lips. to thy

praise, and warm my heart with gratitude and love.

Now the darkness is come and night is drawing its shadows over me, I still rejoice and hope in thee, the God of my life, my light and my salvation. The darkness and the night bear witness to thy goodness, and to. the provisions it hath made for our comfort: I praise thee, the giver of that wisdom, which has taught men to relieve and enliven the hours when the sun is set, by inventions to supply light, that all the time afterwards may not be spent in dreary darkness and unprofitable inactivity; but that some hours might be given to useful labour and chearful inter-courses, I acknowledge thy goodness in furnishing me with the comforts of a habitation and a bed of repose. I own, with gratitude, thy kindness and condescension to the weakness and infirmities of the human frame, by giving us rest and sleep, that our jaded spirits might be refreshed, and our powers of body and mind invigorated. I thank thee,

O thou shepherd of Israel, that, in the prospect of becoming insensible to life, motion and all things about me, I am invited and encouraged to look up to thee, as the guardian of my defenceless hours; to thee who dost never slumber or sleep. I praise thee, that confiding in thy protection, I can lie down and sleep in peace; with the hope of seeing the day renewed, the face of nature renovated, and the morning opening on me with cheerfulness, and calling me forth to the enjoyments and duties of an holy and useful life.

The day is thine; the night is also thine. O gracious God, the power in whom is my safety, keep me and my dwelling, and all around me from all dangers and terrors through this night. May my sleep be comfortable, calm and refreshing. May no pain or sickness attack me, and no dreams of fancy distress me. In the morning may my eyes behold the returning light in health and gladness. May I awake qualified and disposed

for the duties to which thy providence shall call me; lifting up my heart to thee with thankfulness, consecrating my renewed powers to thy service, confiding in thy providence for all my future days, walking as the child of the light and the day, and looking forward to the night of death with composure and peace, and to the morning of the resurrection with a sure, sublime and purifying hope. At night and morning, awake or asleep, be thou with me. Let thy hand sustain me; thy love and fear rule me; thy comforts delight my soul; and thy favour be the light of my countenance and my felicity for ever. I pour out before thee, the eternal God, these sentiments of thankfulness and trust, in the name of Jesus, the light of the world; for whom I praise thee. May his name be known, and ardent praises for him and the salvation through him be spread through all the world. May his gospel enlighten all men; its consolations abound to the afflicted; and its blessings be the everlasting portion of those who are near and dear to me.
