alone cometh down every good and perfect gift. To thee, therefore, as the sole original fountain of all my mercies, relating to the concerns of time and eternity, through whatever channels conveyed to me, I now offer up the humble tribute of my praise, from a heart filled with inexpressible gratitude and the deepest sense of thy unmerited goodness..

I thank thee for the safe and refreshing slumbers of another night, for the restoration

of my mental and bodily powers this morning, and for the opportunity, afforded me by the prolongation of life, of ascertaining the sincerity of my repentance and the strength of my good resolutions, and of acquiring a greater preparation for future happiness. May I go from this religious exercise better qualified to withstand the temptations, to perform the duties, to bear the evils, and to enjoy the innocent pleasures of life. Impressed with an habitual sense of thy constant inspection and of my accountableness to thee, may I never allow myself to overlook any duty, which thou hast required me to discharge, or to suffer the force of the obligation which I am under to perform it, to be lessened, in my apprehension, by any

fancy or passion of my own mind, the sug gestion of others, or a sight of the common practice of the world. May supreme love to thee, the best of all beings, and disinterested benevolence to all mankind, co-operate with a regard to my own eternal well-being, to deter mine me at all times to promote thy glory, and the good of my fellow-creatures around me, to the utmost of my power. From the uniform pursuit of such a conduct let nothing be able to divert me. With a conviction, thoroughly settled in my mind, that vice is a stain and reproach, and virtue an ornament and honour to human nature, may I act in every private pursuit, and in all my business and intercourse with society, equally solicitous, wherever I may be, or whatever I may be about, to approve myself to thee, the omnipresent and omniscient Deity, and to my own conscience. Making it my first and highest concern to cherish and strengthen all worthy principles in my mind, and to follow their guidance in all the actions. of my life, may I indulge no distressing anxiety about the events of time, but, relying with full confidence on thy paternal care, enjoy, with thankfulness and moderation, all the bounties, and submit, with patience and undoubting ex

pectation of a happy issue, to all the afflictive dispensations of thy providence.

O common Father of the whole human race! bring those, who know thee not and call not upon thy name, to the belief and acknowledgment of thy being, perfections, and government, to an acquaintance with the truth as it is in Jesus, and to the observance of thy righteous laws. Let the fullness of the gentiles come in, and all Israel be saved. May all the professors of the gospel come to own thee alone to be their God and father, and Christ alone to be their master, in divine things; endeavour to edify one another in knowledge, faith, and holiness; love, as brethren, with a pure and generous affection; and be careful to depart from all iniquity.

Bless my native country with peace, plenty, and prosperity. Assist its Legislators in forming, and its Magistrates in executing, laws, that effectual provision may be made for the just punishment of evil doers, and the praise and protection of those who do well. Dispose the ministers of the gospel among us to give attendance to reading, exhortation, and doc.

trine; to instruct opposers of the truth with meekness; to be examples to believers in word, in conversation, in charity, in spirit, in faith, in purity. May we all be faithful in the discharge of every duty arising from our respective ages, ranks, relations, employments, and any other permanent or occasional circumstances in life, and thus contribute, in proportion to our several abilities, to the common welfare; enjoy individually, in the present state, that peace of mind which cannot be taken from us, and receive hereafter from our judge a crown of unfading glory,.

To thy unerring disposal I now commend myself. If it be thy will, direct my steps in safety through the day; prosper my honest labours; and bring me again to the footstool of thy throne in the evening, still blessed with. health, ease, and comfort, But whatever events await me on this or any future day of my life, may they find me prepared to improve them aright.

And now, O God, my hope is in thee. Leave me not, neither forsake me, O God of my salvation! Be my guide even unto death,

and my portion for ever; and thine for ever be the praise. Amen.

SATURDAY EVENING.

What

ETERNAL GOD! thou alone art possessed of underived, absolutely perfect, and immutable excellence of nature and character. ever exists throughout the boundless regions of space, derived its being from thee; was assigned by thee its place and uses in thy creation; and is every moment accomplishing, under thy unerring direction, the ends intended by thy wisdom and goodness to be answered by it. Thou, O Lord, art great, and dost wondrous things: thou art God alone.

I thank thee, the creator, proprietor, and ruler of all things, for conscious existence, for the rank and situation allotted me among thy works, and for the capacity and means of enjoyment, with which I have been furnished. All human beings and all inferior creatures, that have in any way contributed to my welfare, have been instruments employed by thee for my good. While I desire to cherish a
