and yield an unreserved and uniform obedience to all thy righteous commandments.

In solemn testimony of my good-will to all my brethren, I desire also to offer up my humble supplications for the whole human race, beseeching Thee, the great Parent of the universe! to extend thy merey and favour to them according to their several situations and circumstances.

Grant that all the families of the earth may be speedily brought to the knowledge and pure worship of Thee, the only true God, that all superstition and false religion may be done away, and the kingdom of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ may take root and spread itself in every part of the world, bringing all mankind into subjection to those laws of truth and righteousness which shall never have an end.

I would humbly implore thy fatherly goodness in favour of all who are involved in troubles, and suffering under afflictions. Restore health to the sick-give ease to all that are in pain-relieve and rescue all that are persecuted or oppressed-and comfort all that mourn.

Prosper the righteous endeavours of those who are actively engaged in projects

and enterprises, which have for their object the amelioration of the morals of mankind, and the improvement of their understandings. Enable them to adopt the most prudent and effectual expedients for the accomplishment of their designs; and grant them that spirit of perseverance which will carry them through all difficulties, and render them finally successful.

Let there be a right understanding between rulers and the ruled of the nature and just end of government, and the salutary purposes it is intended to answer. Make both of them wise to keep these purposes in sight, and to act upon all occasions with a steady and uniform view to their attainment. May the severity of law be tempered with such moderation as reason and equity require, and due allowances made for peculiarity of circumstances and difficulty of situation.

Dispose the minds of men to the right observance of all relative duties, that in the conjugal, parental, filial, and fraternal relation, nothing may be wanting to secure mutual confidence and to promote mutual happiness. May the authority of masters be exercised with gentleness and mercy,

and the return they meet with from their servants be that of faithful and cheerful obedience.

Now unto Thee, the one only true and eternal God! the source of all my former mercies, and of all my present enjoyments, the God upon whom every future hope is dependent, both in time and through the revolving ages of eternity, I would devoutly ascribe all honour and glory, blessing, thanksgiving, and praise, henceforth and for evermore.-Amen.

TWENTY-FIFTH ADDRESS.

O THOU infinite and eternal Jehovah! who comprisest in thyself all that is great and good-all that is adorable and perfect. Every thing that proceeds from Thee tends to promote general felicity ;-both good, and, what appears to us, evil, pleasures and pain, prosperity and adversity, rewards and punishments, favours and chastisements, are well fitted to exalt thy creatures to higher degrees of excellence and happiness. Thou pourest forth the streams of light and life of joy and comfort, through all the different parts of thy immense dominions.

I desire to adore Thee as my Creator. I am the work of thy hands. Thou art my sovereign, I am thy subject. Thou art my father, I am thy child. I am connected with Thee by the strongest and most endearing ties-by all that can give Thee the justest claim to the whole affection of my heart, and the uniform grateful obedience of my life.

Various and invaluable O Lord! are the gifts and benefits which Thou hast bestowed, and which Thou still continuest to confer upon me. How can I justly prize the rich tokens of thy love given me by Jesus Christ, through whom Thou hast assured me of the forgiveness of my sins, and of thy gracious acceptance of my sincere though imperfect services! I am as much surrounded with thy mercies as I am with the light that shines around me, and the air which I breathe.

Grant then, O God! that I may love Thee with all the powers I possess, and that the idea of thy existence and amiable venerable attributes may become the most consoling and delightful that I am capable of forming, that I may habitually think of Thee as my benefactor, friend, and father, with the most lively transports of gratitude and joy. May I never forget that all things proceed from Thee, and that it is thy wisdom and thy love which dispense both good and evil.

pray that my joy and happiness may always consist in knowing and loving Thee-in conforming my will to thine-in resigning myself into thy hands, as into
