And now may there be ascribed unto Thee, the eternal and unchangeable Jehovah! the King of heaven and Lord of glory! all praise and power, salvation and blessing, thanksgiving and honour, henceforth and for ever. Amen.

TWENTY-NINTH ADDRESS.

MOST mighty God eternal! I would bow down before thy footstool with the humblest reverence and devoutest awe, beseeching Thee to lend a gracious ear to the requests and petitions which I feel anxious to lay before Thee.

Dispense to me the good things of this world in such measure as may be fitted to my present comfort and well-being, without becoming a snare to me, or leading me to excess. Grant me such a share of them as may not be inconsistent with the real wants or reasonable expectations of any of my brethren, and give me a heart to enjoy thy mercies with greater satisfaction, when I see others parta king equally in thy providential goodness and bounty.

Continue to me the free and undiminished use of all the powers, faculties, and abilities which I enjoy, and give me wisdom to improve them as I am assured Thou requirest of me. Inspire me with the greatest dread of being ever numbered amongst those unprofitable servants who are worthy

of having their portion with the perfidious. Quicken me in my progress towards the excellence which Thou hast made me capable of reaching, and let me never be weary of well-doing, but rather press on with unceasing perseverance to the prize of my high-calling in Christ Jesus my Lord.

Happy is it for me that I have power to raise my mind, and in thought unite myself to Thee. I am sensible, O God! that my knowledge of Thee is exceedingly imperfect; but adored be thy goodness! Thou hast taught me to know Thee in the character of a father, and to trust, revere, and rejoice in thy paternal benevolence. Insignificant and impotent as I feel I am in myself, and lost in the immense multitude of thy creatures which people heaven and earth, and all the various worlds that exist in the universe, yet I know and am convinced that Thou seest me at all times, and art mercifully attentive to my happiness and welfare,

None of thy creatures are below thy gracious and condescending notice; all are equally present to thy extended and comprehensive intelligence, and enjoy thy

favour according to their progress in wisdom and virtue. We are as much the objects of thy care as though we were the only creatures that are dependent upon Thee. Thou regardest the whole family of mankind, and consultest the special good of each individual, while Thou superintendest the concerns and directest the affairs of the whole.

I would rejoice before Thee, O Lord! in the abundant and pleasing evidence afforded to mankind, that there is nothing either in the heaven above or on the earth beneath, which does not evince thy greatness and testify thy excellencies and perfections. The works of thy hand demonstrate thy power, thy wisdom, and thy goodness. All that Thou hast made is perfect in its kind. Every being is formed to enjoy the happiness of which it is capable; and for those, whom Thou hast placed in a state of probation, and made accountable for their actions, Thou hast graciously designed a state of higher felicity and greater excellence than they have yet attained.

Forgive me, O thou God of mercy! the insensibility and ingratitude of which I

have been guilty in time past. Through every part of my remaining life I pray Thee to support me under every temptation, so that I may rire superior to it, and steadily persevere in a course of uninterrupted holiness and obedience. Enable me continually to advance in all the habits of love and piety towards Thee, my God! and of benevolence and goodwill to all my brethren of mankind. May I take Jesus Christ for my pattern in these and all other virtues, for whom and for whose mission I desire to be for ever thankful.

The aid, direction, and support which I humbly implore for myself, I would earnestly entreat Thee to grant to all my brethren of mankind. Make all men partakers of the same blessings which I enjoy, and dispose them to make the best use of them. Enlighten with thy truth the nations that still sit in darkness, aud bring them to the knowledge of thyself and of Jesus Christ.

Direct the great and powerful in the right discharge of the high and important duties that belong to their exalted stations. Let the spirit of sound wisdom direct the counsels and proceedings of statesmen and
