period of my past days hast given me continual reason to adore thy benignity, and to glory in thy protecting and preserving goodness. Unto Thee would I now lift up the voice of thanksgiving for thy kind care of me through the past night. Blessed be thy holy name for permitting me to enjoy the refreshment of sweet repose, and raising me again to experience renewed proofs of thy loving-kindness and compassion. This day and every day may I live to Thee, and sincerely serve Thee, that so when the number of my days is complete,

Ι

may die to Thee and be for ever thine.

TWELFTH ADDRESS.

EVENING.

GREAT Parent of the universe, and lover of mankind! accept the offering of my humble and devout thanks, for thy goodness to me through the past day. Thou hast preserved me amidst many dangers, and continued to me the riches of thy grace. The personal and social mercies which I have experienced at thy hands, still remain with me to gladden my course, and to confirin my trust in thy benevolence and love. Let

me be a partaker of thy protecting mercy in the defenceless hours of darkness. Preserve me from every evil by night and by day; and be Thou my guide and guardian through every stage of existence in this life, and for ever.

THIRTEENTH ADDRESS.

MORNING.

To Thee, O Thou ever-living fountain of good! I desire now to offer up my morning sacrifice of adoration, praise and gratitude; and may my offering come before Thee with acceptance, and find favour in thy sight. Most justly art Thou entitled to my devoutest thanks for the peaceful repose which I have experienced in the past night, and for bringing me to the light of a new day in the present circumstances of health and comfort. To thy guardianship, direction, and blessing I humbly commit myself in every part of this day. Let me continue to experience thy grace and mercy that I may rejoice in Thee evermore, and continually proceed in that way which will finally lead me to heaven and to thyself.

FOURTEENTH ADDRESS.

EVENING.

DEVOUTLY thankful to Thee, O God! for the preservation of thy good providence throughout the day that is now closed, I would humbly commend myself and all that belong to me to thy divine protection for this night. Keep us from all evil and danger, and from fear and dread of any. May our sleep be comfortable and refreshing, enabling us to proceed in the journey of life with alacrity and pleasure, and to continue our efforts to be useful in the world, and to promote thy glory. Dispose us to work the works of Thee, our God! patiently doing and bearing thy whole will, that our evening of life may be calm and serene, and that we may be able to retire from the world with satisfaction, and to close our eyes upon it with resignation, composure, and peace.

FIFTEENTH ADDRESS.

MORNING.

BLESSED be thy kind providence, O God! that Thou hast preserved me from the evils

that walk in darkness, and hast restored my wearied powers to strength and vigour. Continue, I earnestly beseech Thee, thy loving-kindness and compassion to me, and let me be influenced by a sense of thy great goodness to make every return in my power for it. Preserve me from yielding to any temptation to forget Thee, that may occur this day. By patient continuance in well-doing may I convert every day into a means of qualifying myself more and more for thy mercy and favour unto everlasting life.

SIXTEENTH ADDRESS.

EVENING.

ALMIGHTY God, who art the Father of mercies and the rewarder of all such as diligently seek Thee! it is the humble desire of my soul to be thankful for the mercies of the past day, and for every blessing which Thou still permittest me to enjoy. Be with me, O Lord! through this night. May I lie down under thy protection, and may my sleep be sweet and refreshingfitting and qualifying me for the right discharge of the duties and engagements of

to-morrow; or if it shall seem good to Thee to cut short the term of my mortal existence before the sun returns, may I awake to a happy everlasting day; and with him who is my life, may f appear in glory, and live for ever with him in joy and felicity.
