NINTH ADDRESS.

O ALMIGHTY and eternal God! the Lord and giver of life, and of all the comforts and blessings which I have at any time enjoyed! I would devoutly contemplate the near relation in which I stand to Thee, and the good ground Thou hast afforded me to rely upon thy sustaining power and goodness. Of myself I am a weak, frail, and imperfect creature; but Thou art the most high God, whose wisdom, power, and goodness in-. finitely transcend our most exalted thoughts and conceptions. In Thee are all my hopes centered, and upon thy benignity and grace is all my dependence, both as to this world, and that which is to come.

May it be thy good pleasure, O Lord! to sanctify and bless me in all my desires and pursuits. May I evermore look upon Thee as my father, and my friend. Accept and bless me in the use and improvement of all my rights and privileges as a christian, that there may glow in my breast such an ardent flame of piety, manly, rational, and tempered with the sweetest charity, as may

E

produce all the sacred sentiments of reverential fear, humble resignation, steady reliance, and unchangeable love. Enable me to abound in all the duties of a cheerful obedience to Thee, as well as a tender and fervent charity to all around me, manifesting itself in the blessed fruits of sympathy, condescension, and kindness, and in the most useful acts and expressions of candour, compassion, meekness, humility, forbearance, and disinterested liberality. Grant that my mind may be raised above the allurements and terrors of all situations and circumstances here below, and habitually aspire after thy favour as what is more to be desired than all the treasures of the universe. O raise me to a superiority above every thing that this world can offer to my notice and regard;—may I feel inward tranquillity and self-possession, and enjoy that peace which the world can neither give nor take away.

Holy Father! while I thus adore Thee as the creator and ruler of the world, I would most humbly implore thy mercy in the pardon of all my past transgressions, and pray for thy strengthening grace for the time to come. I consider my dearest interests as depending upon thy mercy and favour, and in Thee would

I center all my hopes and cares for the future. Keep me safe under thy gracious protection, and let me ever esteem it the very worst of evils to forfeit thy favour, and to disqualify myself for thy merciful acceptance at the last. Communicate to all mankind, blessed Lord! the benefits and advantages of the gospel of thy Son Jesus Christ. Since one is our Maker, may our hearts be one. Since we are all members of one great family, may we all unite in our endeavours to promote, as much as in us lies, the common interests of all our brethren. Dispose us to do all we can to recover the disobedient to their duty, and to retain and animate thy faithful servants in the discharge of the obligations under which Thou hast laid them. May all be brought to the love and practice of thy laws. May they experience peace and hope in their death, and meet together in joy and gladness above, there to celebrate thy praises throughout endless ages of ever-growing happiness.

Accept, heavenly Father! my humble prayers for all those that are suffering under sickness, distress, sorrow, or pain of any kind. Whatever be their sorrows, it is in Thee, O Lord! and in Thee alone, they can

find relief. O do Thou remove their suffer ings-heal all their diseases-restore their health-and so sanctify their troubles, that they may be for ever benefited by them. May they be convinced that Thou hast the kindest intentions in sending afflictions; and may they find that it was good for them to have tasted of the cup of grief.

May it seem good to thy divine Majesty to receive and accept this my sacrifice of prayer and praise, which in the sincerity of my heart I have been desirous to offer unto Thee. Answer and fulfil the desires of my heart as far as Thou seest it to be suitable and expedient for me. My humble trust is in that mercy of which Thou hast afforded us abundant proofs, and more especially manifested to us in the gospel of Jesus Christ, whom Thou hast appointed to instruct, enlighten, and save mankind; and in conformity to whose precepts I would now solemnly and devoutly ascribe unto Thee, the one only ever-living and true God! all honour and glory, blessing and praise, henceforth and for evermore.--Amen.

TENTH ADDRESS.

O THOU who art possessed of every adora ble and amiable excellence, whose name is love, and who art able to do more and better for us than we can either ask or think! Do Thou condescend to allow us access to the throne of thy grace, and give ear to our humble supplications, prayers, praises, and intercessions. We behold the monuments of thy power-we trace the footsteps of thy wisdom-and every moment of our lives partakes of the riches of thy goodness; but it is not for us to compute the number of thy mercies, or to measure the extent of thy benignity and love.

I would praise Thee, O Lord! for the discoveries which Thou hast made of thyself in the works of creation and providence, and for thy goodness and loving-kindness to me and to all mankind. I thank Thee for all the noble and useful powers both of body and mind, with which Thou hast been pleased to endow me for my continued preservationfor the rich provision Thou hast made to supply all my returning wants-for health and peace to enjoy the bounties of thy
