providence for every personal and social blessing-and for every agreeable and happy circumstance of my life.

With increased ardour of thankfulness would I bless and praise thy holy name for that stupendous instance of thy love, manifested in the means designed to rescue mankind from the dominion of sin in this world, and the dreadful penalties denounced against it hereafter. I thank Thee for those pure and enlightening doctrines which the gospel teaches, for the powerful motives it affords men to practise those rules of virtue and religion which it prescribes, and for all the alluring graces of an amiable and perfect example, exhibited in the life and conduct of our dear and honoured master. O Lord my God! who is able to enumerate all thy mercies ? Who can estimate the extent of thy lovingkindness and mercy? Who can set forth and express all the praise to which Thou art most justly entitled? Do Thou write a law of love and habitual gratitude upon my heart, and grant that I may walk before Thee in holiness and righteousness all my days.

I would make it my humble prayer, that by daily and serious contemplation of thy works, and of the revelation of thy will in

the gospel of Jesus Christ, I may increase more and more in the knowledge of Thee, my God! attain more pure and worthy conceptions of thy nature and providence, and an habitual reverence for thy divine perfections. Under a serious sense of thy almighty power, may I fear thy displeasure as the worst of evils. From a full persuasion that Thou art perfectly wise and good, may I love Thee with all my heart, rejoice in thy universal government, and yield a cheerful obedience to all thy holy laws.

Dispose me to be faithful and affectionate to my friends-kind and condescending to my inferiors-obliging and respectful to those who are above me-patient and forbearing to my enemies-and just, upright, and good to all. May I put on the ornament of a meek, compassionate, and benevolent spirit, and may every generous and candid disposition be daily improving in my heart. Amidst all the trials, troubles, and vicissitudes of life, may I maintain a constant habit of self-government. In prosperity teach me to be humble, temperate, and charitable; in adversity to be patient and cheerfully resigned to thy unerring providence. Under all circumstances

ces may I be mindful how short my time must be in this world, and how soon I may be called to render au account of my stewardship before the tribunal which Thou hast ordained.

Mercifully regard, gracious God! the works of thy hand; and grant that thy holy name may be known, and thy pure worship prevail throughout the earth. Grant that all people, nations, and languages may know, love, and obey Thee, the only true God, agreeably to the instructions of Jesus Christ our Lord. Subdue, in every place, the spirit of persecution, idolatry, and superstition, and cause liberty and peace, charity and candour, wisdom and goodness, everywhere to abound. Let christians everywhere perfectly understand of what spirit they are.

I would most humbly commend to thy fatherly kindness all those who are in any respect or degree afflicted, troubled, or distressed. Comfort and relieve them agreeably to their several necessities;ease their pains-mitigate their sorrows -lighten their burdens-and, in shortest time that the wise and holy laws by which Thou governest all things will allow, grant them a full, entire, and most

happy deliverance out of their tribulations and sufferings.

I would also implore mercy and forgiveness for all those who are regardless of their own welfare, and look not unto Thee, O God! for succour and support.

O turn the hearts of the disobedient to the wisdom of the just. Soften the hardness of the obdurate and insensible, and give sight to the spiritually blind. Endue us all with strength of mind, and resolution to break off our sins by true repentance. Let the careless sinner turn to Thee with deep contrition and repentance, and reinstate in thy favour all those who are anxious to be reconciled unto Thee, and to devote themselves henceforth to thy service.

Accept me, O my God! in these my humble addresses to the throne of thy inercy. Grant my petitions and requests, as far as they are consistent with the tenor and design of the gospel of Jesus Christ. And unto Thee, the Lord God Omnipotent! be honour and glory, thanksgiving and praise, for ever.- Amen.

ELEVENTH ADDRESS.

ETERNAL ruler of the skies! whose will is uncontroulable-whose power none are able to withstand! Thou formest the light and createst darkness. Thou givest life and Thou takest it away. Thou raisest one and puttest down another—either of the nations, the families, or the individuals of mankind, as seemeth good in thy sight. There is no power in nature but what emanates from Thee. There is no principle of action but what has its source in Thee. Thy providential goodness guides and directs every occurrence and event.

O let me be assured that my pains and sufferings, my fears and apprehensions, are good for me; and though for the present they are not joyous, but grievous, they will hereafter manifest thy goodness, and yield to me abundant felicity and joy. Make me to know and feel that Thou art good. Let me be persuaded that every dark cloud must finally vanish-every perplexing and awful scene must brightenand everything that happens in any part of
