PRAYER XXII. In case of Death. ETERNAL God! in whose hands our breath is, and the breath of all mankind, unto thee do we lift up our souls. To whom should we. look for help or comfort, but to thee our Father in Heaven? For thou dost not willingly afflict thy children; and under thy fatherly hand we desire to humble ourselves at all times, and to say, "Not our will but thine be done." O how great is thy goodness to the frail and dying children of men, in set ting before us the prospect of life and immortality! O how precious to the mourning soul is the blessed hope of meeting long-parted friends in some happy mansion of our Father's house! Grant, O merciful Father, that in this hope our souls may be more and more confirmed and comforted; hereby may we be engaged to devote our remaining lives to thy most holy service ; whereinsoever thou seest fit to render us to each other thy instru ments of good, may we thankfully work together with thy good providence. And whereinsoever thou seest fit to frustrate our hopes and our desires, may we trust in thy fatherly mercy, and humbly adore thine eternal wisdom. Thou canst make all the joys and sorrows of this transitory life work together for good to them that love thee, and keep thy commandments; thou canst restore every comfort; enlarge every capacity; and exalt our |
