tians in the midst of the fea. And the waters covered the chariots, and the horsemen, and all the hoft of Pharaoh, that came into the fea after them: there remained not fo much as one of them.

42....But the children of Ifrael walked upon dry land in the midft of the fea; and the waters were a wallunto them, on their right hand, and on their left.-Thus the Lord faved Ifrael that day out of the hand of the Egyptians, and Ifrael faw the Egyptians dead upon the fea fhore. And Ifrael faw that great work which the Lord did upon the Egyptians; and the people feared the Lord, and believed the Lord, and his fervant Mofes.

CHAPTER XIII.

THE SOLEMN PUBLICATION OF THE LAW OF TEN COMMANDMENTS.

1....

Now

A. M. 2513.

OW the Lord faid unto Mofes, Go unto the people, and fanctity them to-day, and to-morrow and be ready againft the third day; for the third day the Lord will come down in the fight of all the people upon Mount Sinai. And it came to país, on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings and a thick cloud upon the Mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; fo that all the people that was in the camp trembled.

2....And Mofes brought forth the people out of the camp, to meet with God; and they flood at the nether part of the Mount. And Mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the Lord defcended upon it in fire:

and the smoke thereof afcended as the fmoke of a furnace, and the whole Mount quaked greatly.

3....And when the voice of the trumpet founded long, and waxed louder and louder, Mofes (pake, and God anfwered him by a voice. And the Lord came down upon Mount Sinai, on the top of the Mount ; and the Lord called Mofes up to the top of the Mount; and Mofes went up. And God fpake all thefe words, faying, I am the Lord thy God, which have brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

4....Thou shalt have no other Gods before me. Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likenefs of any thing that is in Heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. Thou shalt not bow down thyfelf to them, nor ferve them: for I the Lord thy God am a jealous God, vifiting the iniquities of the fathers upon the children, unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me, and fhewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.

5....

...Thou fhalt not take the name of the Lord thy God in vain; for the Lord will not hold him guiltlefs that taketh his name in vain.

6.... Remember the fabbath day to keep it holy. Six days fhalt thou labour and do all thy work : but the feventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord thy God in it thou fhalt not do any work, thou, nor thy fon, nor thy daughter, thy man fervant, nor thy maid-fervant, nor thy cattle, nor thy ftranger that is within thy gates: for in fix days the Lord made heaven and earth, the fea and all that in them is, and rested the leventh day: wherefore the Lord blefsed the Sabbath-day, and hallowed it.

7....Honour thy father and thy mother; that thy days may be long upon the land which the Lord thy God giveth thee,

8....Thou shalt do no murder.* Thou shalt not commit adultery. Thou shalt not steal. Thou shalt not bear falfe witness against thy neighbour.

9....Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manfervant, nor his maid fervant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's..

10....And the people faw the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the noife of the trumpet, and the mountain smoking: and when the people faw it, they removed, and flood afar off. And they faid unto Mofes, Speak thou with us, and we will hear but let not God fpeak with us, left we die. And Mofes faid unto the people, Ear not, for God is come to prove you, and that his fear may be before your faces, that ye fin

not.

:

*This divine precept, Thou shalt do no murder, perfely accords with human feelings; and every heart must confent to it as being holy, juft and good. But a barbarous custom, eftablifhed in a dark and brutul age. does ftill maintain its ground, though it directly violates this divine law, and outrages all genuine feelings of humanity: I mean duelling.

It furely must be affecting to every benevolent mind, that even in our enlightened country this practice has been Juffered and is now fast increafing a practice that wantonly ports with the tears of the widow and orphan, and with the blood of men, and that fets at defiance the great and facred statute law of heaven.

CHAPTER XIV.

MANNA.

A. M. 2552.

ND they took their journey from Elim ; and all the congregation of the children of Ifrael came unto the wildernefs of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai. And the whole congregation of the children of Ifrael murmured against Mofes and Aaron in the wildernefs.

2....And the children of Ifrael faid unto them, Would to God we had died by the hand of the Lord in the land of Egypt, when we fat by the flesh pots, and when we did eat bread to the full: for ye have brought us forth into the wildernefs, to kill this whole affembly with hunger.

3....Then faid the Lord unto Mofes, Behold, I will rain bread from heaven for you; and the people fhall go out and gather a certain rate every day, that I may prove them, whether they will walk in my law or not. And it fhall come to pafs that on the fixth day they fhall prepare that which they bring in; and it fhall be twice as much as they gather daily.

4....And Mofes and Aaron faid unto all the congiegation, At even, then ye fhall know that the Lord hath brought you out from the land of Egypt. And in the morning, then ye fhall fee the glory of the Lord; for that he heareth your murmurings against the Lord: and what are we, that ye murmur against us?

5...And Mofes fpake unto Aaron, Say unto all the Congregation of the children of Ifrael, come near before the Lord: for he hath heard your murmurings. And

it came to pass, as Aaron fpake unto the whole con gregation of the children of Ifrael that they looked toward the wilderness, and, behold, the glory of the Lord appeared in the cloud.

6....And the Lord fpake unto Mofes, faying, I have heard the murmurings of the children of Ifrael; Speak unto them, faying, At even ye fhall eat flesh, and in the morning ye fhall be filled with bread and ye fhall know that I am the Lord your God. And it came to pass, that even the quails came up, and covered the camp; and in the morning the dew lie round about the hoft.

7....And when the dew that lie was gone up, behold upon the face of the wildernefs there was a fmall round thing as fmall as the hoar froft on the ground. And when the children of Ifrael faw it, they faid, one to an other, it is manna: for they knew not what it was. And Mofes faid unto them, This is the bread which the Lord hath given you to eat.

8....This is the thing which the Lord hath commanded, gather it, every man according to his eating; an omer for every man; according to the number of your persons, take ye every man for them which are in the tents. And the children of Ifrael did fo, and gathered, fome more, fome lefs. And when they did measure it with an omer, he that gathered much had nothing over, and he that gathered little had no lack.

9....And it came to pafs, that on the fixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for a man : and all the rulers of the congregation came and told Mofes. And he faid unto them, this is that which the Lord hath faid, to-morrow is the reft of the holy Sabbath unto the Lord : bake that which ye will bake to
