THE

HYMN II. L. M.

HE day of wrath, that dreadful day When heav'n and earth shall pass away! What power shall be the sinner's stay? Whom shall he trust that dreadful day? 2 When, shrivelling like a parched scroll, The flaming heav'ns together roll;

When, louder yet, and yet more dread, Swells the high trump that wakes the dead; 3 Oh on that day, that wrathful day, When man to judgment wakes from clay, Be Thou, O Christ! the sinner's stay, Though heav'n and earth shall pass away!

HYMN III. P. M.

GREAT God of Hosts! come down in Thy

glory;

Shake earth and heav'n with thine awful tread; Seal Thou the book of our world's dark story, Summon to judgment the quick and the dead!

2 Great God of Hosts! come down to rule o'er us! Long have we pray'd for Thy peaceful reign; Change this sad earth to an Eden before us, Make it the mansion of bliss again!

3 Great God of Hosts! the dreadful, the glorious!
Come, and establish thy kingly throne;
Over the legions of hell victorious,
Rule in the world of thy saints alone!

HYMN IV. L. M.

E comes! He comes! the Judge severe !
The seventh trumpet speaks Him near:
His lightnings flash, His thunders roll:
How welcome to the faithful soul!

2 From heav'n angelic voices sound,
Behold, the Lord Almighty crown'd!
Girt with his omnipresent might,
And all his radiant form is light.
3 Descending on his glorious throne,
He claims the kingdoms for his own;
The kingdoms all obey his word,
And hail Him their triumphant Lord.
4 Shout, all ye people of the sky,
And all ye saints of God Most High!
The Christ, who now his right obtains,
For ever and for ever reigns!

HYMN V. SEVENS.

1 IN the sun and moon and stars,
Signs and wonders there shall be ;
Earth shall quake with inward wars,
Nations with perplexity.

2 Soon shall ocean's hoary deep,
Toss'd with stronger tempests, rise,
Darker storms the mountains sweep,
Redder light'ning rend the skies.

F

3 Evil thoughts shall shake the proud,
Racking doubt and restless fear;
And, amid the thunder-cloud,
Shall the Judge of Men appear!
4 But, though from that awful face
Heav'n shall fade and earth shall fly,
Fear not ye, His chosen race,
Your redemption draweth nigh!

HYMN VI. L. M.

THE
THE Lord will come! the earth shall
quake,

The hills their ancient seat forsake,
And, with'ring, from the vault of night
The stars withdraw their feeble light.
2 The Lord will come! but not the same
As once in lowly form He came-
A silent Lamb, to slaughter led,

The bruis'd, the suff'ring, and the dead : 3 The Lord will come! a dreadful form, With wreath of flame, and robe of storm, On cherub wings, and wings of wind, Anointed Judge of human-kind.

4 Can this be He, who wont to stray
A pilgrim on the world's highway,
By power oppress'd, and mock'd by pride?
O God! is this the crucified?

5 Go, tyrants! to the rocks complain;
Go, seek the mountain's cleft in vain!
But Faith, victorious o'er the tomb,
Shall sing for joy-The Lord is come!
