Again, by means of these two Globes, the Doctrine of Eclipses, and of the Tides, may be tolerably well illustrated.

And if the leffer Globe be carried round the Candle, either further off than the Earth, to represent a superior Planet; or nearer, to represent an inferior one; it may easily be fhewed, how the Planets will fometimes appear Weftward of the Sun, fometimes Eastward; and, confequently, how they are fometimes Morning Stars, fometimes Evening Stars to the Earth.

In the Third Part of the enfuing Treatife, which shews the Application of Aftronomy to Chronology, I have inferted several memorial Canons, adapted to the Gregorian Style, for most of which I am obliged to Mr. John Canton, M. A. and F. R. S. all those, and the Explications of them, which are marked with an Afterism are His.

The Hypothefis in the Appendix is, for ought I know, entirely new. I offer it as an Hypothefis. It is fatisfactory to my own Mind; whether it will appear fo to others, I must leave with my readers.

A Defeription of the Globes; particularly of the Terreftrial Globe,

its Points and Circles.

A

GLOBE or Sphere fignifies a round Body, every Part of whofe Surface is equally diftant from its Center.

BY THE GLOBES, which we are now to treat of, we mean two fuch artificial fpherical Bodies, one of which is fuppofed to represent the Earth, and the other the vifible Heavens. The former is called the Terreftrial or Terraqueous Globe, the latter the Celestial.
