pare us for their disappointment. the discipline of this and each day, nearer in all good affections to the blessedness of that world, which will soon open on our vision; and may we then be owned and accepted through infinite mercy, in the Saviour of men.

MONDAY EVENING.

O GOD, most High! who art greatly to be reverenced in the assemblies of the saints, and not less in the family circle:-Thou hast given grace to us, thy servants, with one accord to make our common supplication unto Thee. Yet we would not heedlessly rush into thy presence; we would not take upon irreverent lips, thine adorable name. Help us to unite, with a filial trust and gratitude, the homage due to that Lofty One, who inhabiteth eternity. Above all, O God, may we bring to this service, the humiliation which becomes us. We come not to speak of our virtues, for we have none that can be named before thee. Conscious we are, that we can come only with the sacrifices of a broken spirit, and a contrite heart, which thou wilt not despise. With a genuine sorrow we would

mourn over the disorders of our hearts, and the offences of our lives; over our wasted hours, perverted talents, and abused blessings; over lost opportunities both of improvement and usefulness. We mourn our frail resolutions, our heartless prayers, and our partial services towards the best of Masters. O GOD, help us here to form those purposes of a stricter obedience, which reliance on thy grace can enable us to perfect. Grant that our light may so shine before men, that we may give no cause for the reproach of a hollow and heartless profession. Give us not only a firm, unwavering faith, in the momentous truths of the Gospel, but make it an active and living principle. O may it manifest itself in love, purify the heart, and overcome the world. Suffer us not to rest contented, with a name to live, while we are virtually dead.

May we show our sense of the light and privileges we possess, in every way which is open to us. May we contribute, with our prayers and our means, to diffuse the knowledge of the truth, among those who are in the region of the shadow of death. By our counsels and example, may we give to these truths more of reality and power, over our associates and friends.

forbid that any who are near and dear to us, should live as aliens from thee; and be found at the last, worthy of a separation forever from thy blissful presence.

O GOD, vouchsafe to us thy protection this night; and when the long night of death shall overtake us, be then our staff and stay: may we enter its darkness, fearing no evil, and rise to that glorious world, whose blessedness eye hath not seen, ear hath not heard, and the heart of man hath not conceived; and where Jesus hath already entered, as our forerunner. These and all things we ask and hope, only through abounding mercy in him; and unto Thee, his Father and ours, be everlasting praise.

TUESDAY MORNING.

O THOU all-perfect One! the centre of excellence, and the fountain of life! help us to gain some due and worthy sense of that perfection manifested around us, above us, and within us; of that wisdom which no difficulty can perplex, of that power which no other power can resist, and of that bounty which no communications can exhaust. Thou hast opened upon us, the

cheering and joyous light of another day, when this, thy glory, is reflected anew from every scene of thy creation. The heavens shine with thy grandeur; the earth is full of thy praise. come again to seek thy favour, which is life; to cast ourselves on thy. Providence once more, as our guard and guide, through the path of duty. Give us discernment, to perceive the various ends of thy discipline, as it may this day await us; give us faithfulness to improve them. In all our ways, we would acknowledge Thee; wilt thou direct our paths.

O God! may we not be content to be blameless only; but seeing we are a part of thy great family here, may we seek the prosperity, peace, and virtue, of that portion to which we belong, with an unfeigned benevolence. Make us to feel that we are all members one of another; and that if we are men and christians indeed, we shall weep with those that weep, and rejoice with those that rejoice. Help us to bear each other's burthens with patience, and their infirmities with tenderness; to watch over each other's spiritual state with affectionate concern, and in all things to fulfil the law of love.

Heavenly Father, enable us by thy grace to maintain an equal mind, in whatever condition

we are. May we not distrust thee in adversity, or forget thee in prosperity. When darkness veils thy dealings, may we hold fast our confidence, believing that what we know not now, we shall know hereafter; and that thy righteous providence will then be seen, clear as the noonday. O that when that time shall arrive, we may share in the triumph of thy people, and though unworthy, be accepted and blest for thy mercy's sake.

TUESDAY EVENING.

O THOU infinite Spirit! without beginning of days, or end of years; the Creator, Governor, and Disposer of all things! How numerous, how solemn, and yet how tender are the ties that unite us to Thee! May a sense of thine excellency take possession of our souls, and with a filial gratitude be united a becoming reverence. All that we see of Thee, corresponds to what thou hast proclaimed of thyself, and demands and justifies our confidence in thy character. Thanks to thy name, that in endowing us with the powers of reason and faith, thou hast taught us whence all our comforts flow. O that we had
