(2.) Drink offerings; and
(3.) Wave offerings.

Meat off- Meat offerings consisted of flour or parched grain, mixed with frankincense, oil, and salt, with sometimes also a little wine.

erings.

Drink off- Drink offerings consisted of wine, part of which was poured on the offering, and the rest was the perquisite of the priests. These offerings accompanied all sacrifices, and were never made alone.

Wave offerings.

Wave offerings were those placed by the priest in the hands of the offerer, and moved or waved to and fro, to indicate that God was possessor of both heaven and earth.

The annual number of animals offered by the Jews in sacrifices at the public charge was: 11,001 lambs, 132 bullocks, 72 rams, 21 kids, and 2 goats; besides all the sacrifices offered by private individuals, and all the offerings of bread, vegetables, oil, wine, &c.

UNCLEANNESS AND PURIFICATION.

LEV. XI.-XV. NUM. VIII., XIX. DEUT. XXV.

Uncleanness. UNCLEANNESS was some act or some disease which disqualified persons from assisting at the public worship of God. The chief causes of uncleanness were: (1) Leprosy; (2) Running sores; and (3) Touching a dead body.

Its chief causes.

What was done with the unclean.

The unclean were purified, after a given time, by being sprinkled with what was called the Water of Separation. What that was. This was the water of a running spring poured on the ashes of a red heifer. The sprinkling was performed by the priest with a bunch of hyssop.*

by leprosy.

leprosy.

What was affected Leprosy affected (1) man; (2) houses; and (3) clothes. Human Leprosy in man was a most noisome disease, which affected the skin with scales and ulcers. As it was infectious, the leper was shut out from society and from the temple.

*In some few cases it was sufficient to sprinkle the unclean with blood, or to anoint him with oil.

How cured. It was cured by no medicine, but by the immediate interposition of God.

How lepers When a person was leprous, he went proceeded. to the priest to be examined; the

priest pronounced him unclean, and he remained amongst lepers till the disease left him. What he did As soon as he was healed, he went when healed. again to the priest to be examined. If the priest was satisfied, he took two live pigeons, one of which he slew and sprinkled its blood seven times on the leper, pronouncing him clean; the other bird was dipped in the blood, and then suffered to fly away.

leprosy was.

What house- Leprosy in houses developed itself by green and red spots in the wall. Such a house was shut up for a time; if the spots disappeared, the wall was scraped and repaired; but if the spots spread, the wall or house was pulled down.

leprosy was.

What clothes Leprosy in clothes appeared also as green or red spots. If the spots would not wash out, the clothes were burnt.

Sacrifices

a type.

[ocr errors][merged small]

SACRIFICES were a TYPE of CHRIST. They were instituted immediately after the fall, when the first promise of a Mediator

was made; and ceased when Christ suffered on the cross, when the shadow or type gave way to the thing typified.

THEY PREFIGURED JESUS CHRIST.

I.-In the following characteristics:

(1.) The animal sacrificed was always without blemish. So Christ was holy, harmless, and undefiled;

(2.) It was always a clean animal, fit for food. To shew that Christ would be as much one of us, as the food we eat is one with the body by digestion;

(3.) The animal sacrificed was not a wild animal, but one which formed a valuable possession of the offerer, to shew that Christ would be precious to believers;

(4.) The character of the animal offered sym bolized some moral quality of our Redeemer, as for example: the innocent dove, the meek lamb, the patient uncomplaining sheep, the laborious and honest ox, &c.

II.-In the following rites of immolation :

(1.) On the animal offered was first laid the guilt of the offerer by the imposition of hands and by confession of sins. So on Christ was laid by imputation the sins of the whole world;

(2.) After the imputation of guilt, the blood of the animal was shed, as that of Christ, for the remission of sins;

(3.) The burning of the animal wit figured the suffering of our Redeem (4.) The multiplication and re sacrifices shewed their imperfection

sacrifice of Christ is but once made, because it is perfect. (Heb. x. 1-14.)

Red heifer The RED HEIFER was a TYPE of JESUS a type. CHRIST:

(1.) It was without blemish, and one on which no yoke had ever come, to signify the innocence of our Redeemer, and his voluntary death;

(2.) It was red, to prefigure him who " came from Bozrah with a vesture dyed in blood;"

(3.) It was slain without the camp, as Christ was crucified without the gate;

(4.) It was burnt, and the ashes, being mixed with water, were sprinkled on the unclean; so Christ by his death, through the influence of the Holy Ghost, purges away sin, and renders the heart clean.

Leprosy a type. LEPROSY was a TYPE of SIN:

(1.) It was a disgusting malady; so sin is a "hateful evil;"

(2.) It was infectious; so "evil communications corrupt good morals;"

(3.) The leper was cut off from the society of the healthy and from the temple; so the sinner has no part in the communion of saints, and no access to heaven;

(4.) Leprosy was not curable by medicine, but by God alone; so sin is not atoned for except by Jesus Christ;

(5.) When a leper was healed, the priest took for his cleansing two birds, one of which was slain and the other suffered to fly away. These two birds represented the death of Christ for sin, and his resurrection for our justification;
