THE peculiar feature of this Manual of Ancient Scripture History, is that it may be used either as an ordinary reading book, or as a catechism, according to the option of the person employing it, each sentence being at once complete in itself, and at the same time intimately linked with that which precedes and that which follows it. To prevent the constant interruption of questions, the subject matter of each paragraph has been put in the margin in small type, but no difficulty can possibly arise in converting these sentences into questions. The chapters printed in large type are adapted to the youngest and feeblest capacity; but in order to render the manual generally useful, supplementary chapters have been given, which contain sketches of cotemporary history,, the explanations of types, the political and ceremonial institutions of the Jews, their manners and customs, prophetical allusions, and occasionally doctrinal disputations. The greatest care has been taken to avoid all sectarian or party views; and the author sincerely hopes that if by chance any may have escaped his vigilance, a communication may be made to the publishers; that in a future edition they may be modified or expunged. |
