Have you ever seen a lighted candle? In what ways is it different from an electric light? What picture does the word yellow with candle light suggest to you? Can you think of another word that would describe candle light as well as yellow? Close your eyes and imagine a lighted candle. Then try to find a good word to describe it.

When you read The birds still hopping on the trees, what does the word hopping suggest to you? Show with two fingers how a bird hops. Close your eyes and imagine you see little birds moving about on a tree. Suppose the writer had used the word jumping. Would that be a better word than hopping? Why?

What other words in the poem suggest a picture to you?

Suppose you should see a lame old man crossing the street. What word or words might you use to show how he walked?

Suppose you should see a child five or six years old crossing the street. What words might you use to show how he moved?
