FARMER BROWN'S APPLES

Farmer Brown had a large orchard of apple trees. One afternoon in the fall he went out with a basket to get the apples that had been left on the ground. He set the basket under a tree, and, when he had gathered as many apples as he could hold in both hands, he threw them into the basket. He worked away for some time and then he began to feel cold.

"How cold it's growing!" he said to himself. "I wish I had worn an overcoat." He turned up his coat collar and rubbed his hands, and then he put his hands into his pockets.

"I declare," he said, "I think it is going to freeze to-night. It's getting colder and colder." He shivered with the cold. "Just see those apples!" he said as he walked around and pointed first under one tree and then under another. "It's too bad to let them freeze. I wish I had them in a pile so that I could cover them."

Just then four boys came into the orchard and asked the farmer to give them some apples.

"You may have some apples if you will help me to throw these into a pile first," and he pointed to the apples under the trees around them.

"All right," said the boys, "We'll help you."

They picked up all the apples there were under one tree and threw them into the basket very quickly.

Farmer Brown carried the basket to the pile and emptied it, and then carried it to another tree. Here the boys quickly filled it again and the farmer emptied it at the pile.

In this way they went from one tree to another until the apples were all gathered.

Then the boys went to the farmer and asked him for the apples that he promised them.

The farmer told them to take all the apples that they could carry, and they stuffed their pockets so full that they could hardly walk. They tried all the ways that they could think of to carry more.

Then they thanked the farmer for the apples and started for their homes.

How did you like the moving pictures? Do you think any of the other pupils could have done better? Could you see every bit of the story? Perhaps you can show the class a better way to act some of the parts.

Now your teacher will choose another group of pupils to act the moving pictures at the next lesson. They may make up a story to act, or perhaps one of them will know a story that the others in the class

have not heard. Of course those who are in the moving pictures must not tell any of the others what the story is. Then at the next lesson, when the moving pictures are shown, the rest of the class will watch very carefully. After the pictures are finished, the pupils in the seats will tell the story that they have seen. It will be fun to see which member of the class can tell the story best. The actors will be the judges to tell whose story was most like the one they made up.

LESSON 11

Real Moving Pictures

39

To-day is the day for the real moving pictures. All those who are not in the play will take their seats in the theatre. The moving pictures will be acted in the front part of the room.

Remember to watch the pictures very carefully so you will not miss anything because, after the pictures are over, you will want to tell the best story. The actors will be the judges. Perhaps, after you have finished, you will like to have one of the players tell the story.

Should you like to have another group of pupils act the same play? Watch to see if they do it as well as the first actors or better.

Perhaps your teacher will let you have moving pictures again at another lesson.

NOTE TO TEACHER. This lesson should be given about two weeks before October 31.

How many in the class know when Hallowe'en comes? It is the evening of the last day in October. We say it is the eve of November 1st just as we call the evening before December 25th Christmas Eve. Did you have a jolly time at Hallowe'en last year? What are you planning to do this year? Remember one thing: It is all right to have fun, but one should never do things that cause other people trouble.
