The teacher will choose a leader who will leave the room. She will also choose another pupil who will stand at the blackboard and who will point to a word for the other pupils in the room to keep in mind. The pupil at the blackboard will now call the leader who will try to find the word. The game will go like this:

Leader: Henry, is the word last?
Henry: No, the word isn't last.

Leader: Dorothy, is the word send?
Dorothy: No, the word isn't send.

Leader: Frances, is the word wind?

Frances: Yes, the word is wind.

If the leader does not pronounce a word distinctly, the pupils may raise their hands and the teacher will appoint another leader. If a pupil forgets and does not pronounce a word distinctly, he is caught.

Exercise

If you hear any one pronounce a word incorrectly, try to remember the word and tell the class about it at the next recitation. You need not tell who pronounced the word.

The Sentence Game

The teacher may divide the class, as the pupils sit, into two equal parts. The teacher will keep the score on the blackboard, and the side that has the larger number of errors loses.

The teacher will appoint a leader, and he may stand in front of the class. It is the leader's duty to call a pupil by name and ask a question. The pupil must reply and make a sentence. The game is to catch a pupil who does not make a sentence. The leader should call a pupil first on one side and then on the other. If the leader does not speak distinctly or does not sound the ends of his words, the teacher will select another leader.

If you think that the pupil who replies to the question does not make a sentence, raise your hand. If the teacher decides that you are right, a mark is put on the blackboard against the side in which the pupil sits. This is the way the game goes:

MAKING SENTENCES A GAME

Leader: Walter, where is your pencil?
Walter: My pencil is on my desk.

Leader: Ruth, how many pencils have you?
Ruth: I have two pencils.

Leader: James what shall you do after school?
James: Go home.

Up go the hands, and a mark is put against his side.

After the leader has asked five or six questions, the teacher may appoint a new leader.

PLANNING FOR A THANKSGIVING PARTY

A PROJECT

LESSON 20

A Thanksgiving Party

Should you like to have a Thanksgiving party in your room? Whom shall you invite? Should you like to invite your father and your mother? Have you brothers and sisters whom you wish to invite?

If you invite people to come to your party, you must plan to entertain them. You may tell one thing that you think will be good for your program, and your teacher will write it on the blackboard. Should you like to sing some Thanksgiving songs? Which ones do you like best? Have you ever learned any short poem that you would like to repeat to your friends? You and your classmates may choose the best suggestions for your program.

Look over this page and a few pages after this and find Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving Day as many times as you can. With what kind of a letter does the word Thanksgiving begin? With what kind of letters do the words Thanksgiving Day begin?

You remember how you wrote the word Hallowe'en. Make a rule for writing the names of holidays. Go to the blackboard and write Thanksgiving and Thanksgiving Day.
