THANKSGIVING PROJECT A GAME

Hunting for the Turkey

61

Turkeys are sometimes hard to catch. You may play that you are trying to find one for Thanksgiving. When the class is ready for the hunt, the teacher will choose a leader, who will leave the room. The other pupils will decide upon a good place for a turkey to hide. The leader will then return and try to find the hiding place of the turkey. The game goes like this:

Leader: Harold, is the turkey in the waste basket?
Harold: No, it isn't in the waste basket.

Leader: Grace, is the turkey behind the teacher's desk?
Grace: No, it isn't behind the teacher's desk.

Leader: Bertha, is the turkey in the book closet?

Bertha: Yes, it is in the book closet.

Bertha may be the next leader. If any pupil forgets and says ain't, he is out of the game.

Should you like to have a Thanksgiving play at your party? If you would, you may make one. There were Indians at the first Thanksgiving dinner; should you like to make up a story about Indians? You may make the play in three parts, or three acts as people call it.

First Act. Village

A party of little girls and boys are playing together. Four bad Indians come along and take one of the little boys away with them. The other children run to tell their parents, and the parents start out to find the little boy. They meet three good Indians, and the good Indians join in the hunt.

Second Act. Woods

The bad Indians tie the little boy to a tree. Two of them stay to guard him, and the other two go off hunting.

The white men and the good Indians rush up, and the two bad Indians run away. Friends cut the cords that bind the little boy, and all go back to the village.

Third Act. Village

Thanksgiving dinner of settlers and good Indians. After the dinner the children sing songs for the Indians who grunt with approval.

You must imagine what the children and the grown up people say and do. It will be well for you to go through the play several times before the time for your party.

LESSON 22

Inviting Our Friends

How shall you let your friends know that you want them to come to your party? If you write a letter, you will want to write a good letter. Should you not like to have your mother so proud of the letter that she gets that she will wish to show it to her friends? Then you must write it very carefully and neatly. You must not have any blots on it or any words that are crossed out.

If you are writing to your father, mother, brother, or sister, you may begin it in one of these ways:

Dear Papa,
Dear Mamma,
Dear Father,

Dear Mother,

Dear Sister,

Dear Brother.

you

Write just what would say if you were speaking to the one whom you are inviting. You will want to tell when you will give your party and what you will do. Then you may write your name at the end. If you make a good letter, it will look like this:

Dear Mamma,

(Your Name)

When you have finished your letter, show it to your teacher, and perhaps she can help you to make it look better. You may wish to copy if before you take it home. Perhaps you will wish to invite two or three people and to write a letter to each one.
