If you wish to do so, you may dramatize the story. A chair with a wooden seat may be a tree. You must make up what the man and the boys said to each other.

A CHRISTMAS BOOK

LESSON 26

Making Plans

Christmas is coming, and you will wish to give presents to your parents. What kind of present should you like to give to your mother? What should you like to give to your father? Is there any one else to whom you would like to give a present?

Should you like to make a Christmas book to take home? What should you like to put into the book? Should you like to make a pretty cover for it?

We shall have to do a good many things that you cannot put into the book, but all the things that we shall do will help you to make a better book.

Christmas at Our Homes

Now it will be interesting if we know how you spend Christmas at your homes. Tell us what you do on Christmas Eve. If you give presents at that time, do you have a tree? Tell us about a tree that you have had at your home. If you give presents in other ways, tell about these ways. It would be very interesting to know how children in other lands spend Christmas. If you came from another country and can remember about Christmas, tell us all about it. Or perhaps your father and your mother can tell you about Christmas in the country from which they came, and you can tell the story to us.

Mary Anna's Letter to Santa Claus

This is the story of the first letter that Mary Anna ever wrote:

THE STORY OF MARY ANNA'S LETTER

Christmas was coming, and Mary Anna wanted to write a letter to Santa Claus. Mary Anna was only three, but she thought she could write on the typewriter. Her father said. she might try.

Her father put a sheet of paper in the typewriter. He told Mary Anna to write the letter that day, and he would mail it the next morning.

Mary Anna's brother Bob thought his sister did not know how to write a letter, and he wanted to help her. Bob is six and has been to kindergarten.

Mary Anna was going to show Bob that she could write a letter. See in the picture how hard she is working.

Mary Anna worked for some time, and she let Bob roll up the paper for her.

When the letter was finished, and Mother had taken it out, it looked like this:

"Read it to me," said Mother. This is what Mary read:

A STORY

Dear Santa Claus,

I want a dolly that opens and shuts its eyes and that says "Mamma" and "Papa."

Mary Anna.

"That is a very good letter," said Mother. "Now you must put Santa Claus's name on an envelope."

Mother helped Mary Anna fold the letter and slip it into the envelope. Then Mary Anna wrote the address like this:

Mary Anna said that the words she put on the envelope were: "Santa Claus, North Pole."

Bob said he did not think the postman could read that, but Mother said it was all right.

Santa Claus must have received the letter for on Christmas morning, when Mary Anna went into the room where Santa Clause had left all the presents, there was a big doll lying on the hearth just below the toe of Mary Anna's stocking. When the little girl picked the doll up, the doll opened its eyes. Then Mary Anna pressed one side, and a squeaky little voice said, "Mamma." Mary Anna pressed the other side of the doll, and the squeaky little voice said "Papa."

Mary Anna did know how to write a letter on the typewriter, didn't she?
