MICAH. blished in the top of the mountains, and it shall be exalted above the hills; and people shall flow unto it. 2 And many nations shall come and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the Lord, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem. 3 And he shall judge among many people, and rebuke strong nations afar off; and they shall beat their swords into plow-shares, and their spears into pruning-hooks: nation shall not lift up a sword against nation, neither shall they learn war any more. 4 But they shall sit every man under his vine, and under his fig tree; and none shall make them afraid: for the mouth of the Lord of hosts hath spoken it. 5 For all people will walk every one in the name of his god, and we will walk in the name of the Lord our God for ever and ever. 2 But thou, Beth-lehem Ephratah, though thou be little among the thousands of Judah, yet out of thee shall he come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth have been from of old, from everlasting. CHAPTER VI VII. АССЕРТABLE SERVICE OF GOD. 6 WHEREWITH shall I come before the Lord, and bow myself before the high God? shall I come before him with burnt-offerings, with calves of a year old? 7 Will the Lord be pleased with thousands of rams, or with ten thousands of rivers of oil? shall I give my first born for my transgression? 8 He hath shewed thee, O man, what is good; and what doth the Lord require of thee, but to do justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with thy God? 18 Who is a God like unto thee, that pardoneth iniquity, and passeth by the transgression of the remnant of his heritage? he retaineth not his anger for ever, because he delighteth in mercy. 19 He will turn again, he will have HABAKKUK. compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities: and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea. 20 Thou wilt perform the truth to Jacob, and the mercy to Abraham, which thou hast sworn unto our fathers from the days of old. FROM HABAKKUK. CHAP. III. MAJESTY OF JEHOVAH. 2O LORD, I have heard thy speech, and was afraid. 3 His glory covered the heavens, and the earth was full of his praise. 6 He stood and measured the earth: he beheld, and drove asunder the nations; and the everlasting mountains were scattered, the perpetual hills did bow: his ways are everlasting. 10 The mountains saw thee, and they trembled; the overflowing of the water passed by: the deep uttered his voice, and lifted up his hands on high. 11 The sun and moon stood still in their habitation. 13 Thou wentest forth for the salvation of thy people, even for salvation with thine anointed. 17 Although the fig tree shall not blossom, neither shall fruit be in the vine; the labour of the olive shall fail, and the fields shall yield no meat; the flock shall be cut off from the fold, and there shall be no herd in the stalls : 18 Yet I will rejoice in the Lord, I will joy in the God of my salvation. FROM MALACHI. CHAPTER III. IV. PREDICTION OF CHRIST AND HIS FORERUNNER. BEHOLD, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the Lord, whom MALACHI. ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the Lord of hosts. 4 Then shall the offering of Judah and Jerusalem be pleasant unto the Lord, as in the days of old, and as in former years. 6 For I am the Lord, I change not; therefore ye sons of Jacob are not consumed. 12 And all nations shall call you blessed: for ye shall be a delightsome land, saith the Lord of hosts. 17 And they shall be mine, saith the Lord of hosts, in that day when I make up my jewels; and I will spare them, as a man spareth his own son that serveth him. 18 Then shall ye return, and discern between the righteous and the wicked; between him that serveth God, and him that serveth him not. 2 But unto you that fear my name shall the Sun of righteousness arise with healing in his wings. END OF OLD TESTAMENT. SACRED EXTRACTS. FROM THE NEW TESTAMENT. The Law was given by Moses; but Grace came by JESUS CHRIST. St. John. FROM MATTHEW. CHAP. I. MIRACULOUS BIRTH OF CHRIST. 18 THE birth of Jesus Christ was on this wise ; When as his mother, Mary, was espoused to Joseph, 20 Behold, the angel of the Lord appeared unto him in a dream, saying, Joseph, thou son of David, fear not to take unto thee Mary thy wife; for that which is conceived is of the Holy Ghost. 21 And she shall bring forth a son, and thou shalt call his name JESUS; for he shall save his people from their sins. 22 (Now all this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken of the Lord by the prophet, saying, 23 Behold, a virgin shall bring forth a son, and they shall call his name Emmanuel, which, being interpreted, is, God with us.) MATTHEW. CHAPTER II. A STAR GUIDETH THE WISE MEN TO CHRIST. Now, when Jesus was born in Beth-lehem of Judea, in the days of Herod the king, behold, there came wise men from the east to Jerusalem, 2 Saying, Where is he that is born King of the Jews? for we have seen his star in the east, and are come to worship him. 3 When Herod the king had heard these things he was troubled, and all Jerusalem with him. 4 And when he had gathered all the chief priests and scribes of the people together, he demanded of them where Christ should be born. 5 And they said unto him, In Beth-lehem of Judea: for thus it is written by the prophet, 6 And thou, Bethlehem, in the land of Juda, art not the least among the princes of Juda: for out of thee shall come a Governour, that shall rule my people Israel. 7 Then Herod, when he had privily called the wise men, enquired of them diligently what time the star appeared. 8 And he sent them to Beth-lehem, and said, Go, and search diligently for the young child; and, when ye have found him, bring me word again, that I may come and worship him also. 9 When they had heard the king they departed; and, lo, the star, which they saw in the east, went before them, till it came and stood over where the young child was. 10. When they saw the star, they rejoiced with exceeding great joy. 11 And when they were come into the house, they saw the young child with Mary his mother, and fell down, and worshipped him: and when they had opened their treasures, they presented unto him gifts, gold, and frankincense, and myrrh. 12 And being warned of God in a dream that they should not return to Herod, they departed into their own country another way. 13 And when they were departed, behold, the angel of the Lord appeareth to Joseph in a dream, saying, 1 |
