Neither speak they through their throat. 8. They that make them are like unto them; So is every one that trusteth in them. 9. O Israel, trust thou in the LORD:

He is their help and their shield. 10. O house of Aaron, trust in the LORD: He is their help and their shield.

11. Ye that fear the LORD, trust in the LORD: He is their help and their shield.

12. The LORD hath been mindful of us :

He will bless us;

He will bless the house of Israel;

He will bless the house of Aaron.

13. He will bless them that fear the LORD, Both small and great.

14. The LORD shall increase you more and more,

You and your children.

15. Ye are blessed of the LORD

Which made heaven and earth.

16. The heaven, even the heavens, are the LORD'S : But the earth hath he given to the children of men. 17. The dead praise not the LORD,

Neither any that go down into silence.

18. But we will bless the LORD

From this time forth and for evermore.

NOTES ON PSALM CXV.

Verse 1. Sentiment: help us against the heathen, not for our sake, but for thine own glory.

Verse 3. Answer to the scoffing inquiry in the preceding

verse.

Verse 4-7. These verses finely describe the folly of idolatry.

Verse 8. Sentiment: all concerned in idolatry are weak and impotent like the idols themselves.

Verse 10. The house of Aaron were the priests, on whom the preservation of the true religion peculiarly depended.

PSALM CXVI.

Thanks for deliverance from great affliction and danger.

1. I love the LORD, because he hath heard

My voice and my supplications.

2. Because he hath inclined his ear unto me, Therefore will I call upon him as long as I live.

3. The sorrows of death compassed me, And the pains of hell gat hold upon me :

I found trouble and sorrow.

4. Then called I upon the name of the LORD;
"O LORD, I beseech thee, deliver my soul."

5. Gracious is the LORD, and righteous; Yea, our God is merciful.

6. The LORD preserveth the simple:

I was brought low, and he helped me. 7. Return unto thy rest, O my soul;

For the LORD hath dealt bountifully with thee. 8. For thou hast delivered my soul from death, Mine eyes from tears,

And my feet from falling.

9. I will walk before the LORD

In the land of the living. 10. I believed, therefore have I spoken: I was greatly afflicted :

11. I said in my haste,

"All men are liars."

12. What shall I render unto the LORD
For all his benefits toward me?
13. I will take the cup of salvation,

And call upon the name of the LORD. 14. I will pay my vows unto the LORD

Now in the presence of all his people. 15. Precious in the sight of the LORD Is the death of his saints.

16. O LORD, truly I am thy servant;

I am thy servant, and the son of thine handmaid:
Thou hast loosed my bonds.

17. I will offer to thee the sacrifice of thanksgiving, And will call upon the name of the LORD.

18. I will pay my vows unto the LORD

Now in the presence of all his people,

19. In the courts of the LORD's house, In the midst of thee, O Jerusalem, Praise ye the LORD.

NOTES ON PSALM CXVI.

Verse 3. Sentiment: I was in great danger.

Verse 6. The simple, i. e. the unwary and inexperienced, of whom the psalmist considers himself as one. Verse 7. Sentiment: quiet thyself again, after thine alarm and danger.

Verse 9. I will walk before the Lord, i. e. I will conduct in such a manner as to please him.

Verse 10. Therefore have I spoken, namely, in prayer, as mentioned in the fourth verse.

Verse 13. The cup of salvation, i. e. the cup of thanksgiving for my recent deliverance.

Verse 15. This is said as a reason why God had saved him.

PSALM CXXI.

3. He will not suffer thy foot to be moved: He that keepeth thee will not slumber. 4. Behold, he that keepeth Israel

Shall neither slumber nor sleep.

5. The LORD is thy keeper:

The LORD is thy shade upon thy right-hand. 6. The sun shall not smite thee by day,

Nor the moon by night.

7. The LORD shall preserve thee from all evil :

He shall preserve thy soul.

8. The LORD shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in From this time forth, and even for evermore.

NOTES ON PSALM CXXI.

Verse 3. The psalmist addresses himself.

Verse 5. Upon thy right-hand, i. e. ever ready to aid. Verse 6. Sentiment: thou shall be safe at all times. Verse 8. Sentiment: thou shalt be safe in all thy ways. General remark. There is a striking peculiarity in this psalm, which consists in this, that the closing words of one clause are often repeated in the next.
