And after him was Shammah the son of Agee a Hararite.] And the Philistines were gathered together into a troop, where was a plot of ground full of lentils; and the people fled from 12 the Philistines. But he stood in the midst of the plot, and defended it, and slew the Philistines and the LORD wrought d a great victory. 13 And three of the thirty chief went down, [and came] to David B. 1 Chron. 11. This is B.'s introduction before making use of his materials. The ordinary variations in Hebrew letters can easily be illustrated from this list. It contains e.g. for 7, for 7, for , for 7, with transpositions, and changes of defective vocalization into full. b The readings in this verse evidently varied before the time of the LXX, and there is no means of accounting for them. Eight and three are interchanged elsewhere. בחרפס .A • יושע .B .יעש .d A B. D. In B. the copyist has passed over a verse accidentally between the one gathering of the Philistines (A. 9) and the other (A. 11). Manifestly an error. See LXX. A. 2 Sam. 23. A various reading, LXX takes it for a proper .על הצר .B .אל קציר .A • is בור .These forms frequently vary .בור .B .באר .A : name. properly a pit: see A. ver. 20. re-appears. spring of this reading. So Gad came to David, [and told him,] and said unto him, Shall seven years of famine come unto thee spake unto 10 David's seer, saying, Go and speak unto David, [saying,] Thus saith the LORD, I offer thee three things; choose thee one of them, 11 that I may do it unto thee. Gad came to David, 12. So and said unto him, [Thus saith the LORD,] Take which thou wilt; either three years of famine; d According to A., Israel had 800,000 and Judah 500,000. According to B., Israel had 1,100,000 and Judah 470,000.
