the Lord God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from whence he was taken. So he drove out the man: and he placed at the east of the garden of Eden cherubim, and a flaming sword which turned every way, to keep the way of the tree of life.

In either hand the hastening angel caught

Our lingering parents, and to the eastern gate
Led them direct, and down the cliff as fast
To the subjected plain; then disappeared.
They, looking back, all the eastern side beheld
Of Paradise, so late their happy seat,

Waved over by that flaming brand; the gate

With dreadful faces thronged, and fiery arms:

Some natural tears they dropped, but wiped them soon:

The world was all before them, where to choose

Their place of rest, and Providence their guide;

They, hand in hand, with wandering steps and slow
Through Eden took their solitary way.

-From "Paradise Lost," by Milton

THE BEGINNING OF FAMILY LIFE

Now Adam called his wife's name Eve [Life]; because she was the mother of all living.

And Eve became the mother of Cain [Gotten], and said, "I have gotten a man from the Lord." And she became the mother of his brother Abel [Breath]. And Abel was a keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.

And in process of time it came to pass, that Cain brought of the fruit of the ground an offering to the Lord. And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his flock and of the fat thereof. And the Lord had respect to Abel and to his offering: but to Cain and to his offering he had not respect. And Cain was very angry, and his countenance fell. And the Lord said to Cain:

"Why art thou angry?

And why is thy countenance fallen?

If thou doest well, shalt thou not be accepted?

But if thou doest not well, sin croucheth at the door:

And to thee shall be its desire;

But do thou rule over it."

And Cain talked with Abel his brother. And it came to pass when they were in the field that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.

Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel thy brother?" And he said, "I know not: am I my brother's keeper?" And God said: "What hast thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood crieth to me from the ground. And now art thou cursed from the earth, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood from thy hand. When thou tillest the ground, it shall not henceforth yield to thee its strength; a fugitive and a wanderer shalt thou be in the earth."

And Cain said to the Lord: "My punishment is greater than I can bear. Behold, thou hast driven me out this day from the face of the earth; and from thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a wanderer in the earth; and it shall come to pass, that every one that findeth me shall slay me."4

But the Lord said to him:

"Therefore whosoever slayeth Cain,

Vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold."

So the Lord set a mark upon Cain, lest any finding him should kill him. Thus Cain went out from the presence of the Lord, and dwelt in the land of Nod on the east of Eden.

And to Adam was born a son, and Eve called his name Seth [He Hath Appointed]: "For God," said she, “hath appointed me another child, instead of Abel, whom Cain slew."

And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enosh. Then began men to call upon the name of the Lord. And to Enosh was born Kenan, and to Kenan was born Mahalalel, and to Mahalalel was born Jared, and to Jared was born Enoch.
