cepting deliverance, that they might obtain a better refurrection :

36 And others had trial of cruel mockings and fcourgings, yea, moreover of bonds and imprisonment:

37 They were stoned, they were fawn asunder, were tempted, were flain with the fword: they wandered about in fheep-fkins and goat-fkins; being destitute, afflicted, tormented;

38 (Of whom the world was not worthy) they wandered in deferts, and in mountains, and in dens and caves of the earth.

39 And these all having obtained a good report, through faith, received not the promife:

5 And ye have forgotten the exhortation, which speaketh unto you as unto children, My fon, defpife not thou the chaftening of the Lord, nor faint when thou art rebuked of him:

7 If ye endure chastening, God dealeth with you as with fons: for what son is he whom the father chafteneth not?

8 But if ye be without chaftifement, whereof all are partakers, then are ye baftards, and not fons.

9 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh, which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: fhall we not much rather be in fubjection unto the Father of fpirits, and live?

10 For they verily for a

few days chaftened us, after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holinefs.

II Now no chaftening for the present feemeth to be joyous, but grievous: nevertheless afterward it yieldeth the peaceable fruit of righteousness unto them which are exercised thereby. 12 Wherefore lift up the hands which hang down, and the feeble knees;

13 And make ftraight paths for your feet, left that which is lame be turned out of the way, but let it rather be healed.

14 Follow peace with all men, and holiness, without which no man fhall fee the Lord:

15 Looking diligently, left any man fail of the grace of God; left any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled;

16 Left there be any fornicator, or profane perfon, as Efau, who for one morfel of meat fold his birthright.

7 That the trial of your faith being much more precious than of gold that perifheth, though it be tried with fire, might be found unto praise, and honour, and glory, at the appearing of Jefus Chrift:

17 And if ye call on the Father, who, without respect of perfons, judgeth according to every man's work, pass the time of your fojourning here in fear:

18 Forafmuch as ye know that ye were not redeemed with corruptible things, as filver and gold, from your vain converfation received by tradition from your fathers;

13 Wherefore gird up the loins of your mind, be fober, and hope to the end, for the grace that is to be brought unto you at the revelation of Jefus Chrift;

14 As obedient children, not fashioning yourfelves according to the former lufts, in your ignorance:

15 But as he which hath called you is holy, fo be ye holy in all manner of converfation;

Herefore laying afide all malice, and all guile, and hypocrifies, and envies, and all evil-speakings,

11 Dearly beloved, I befeech you as ftrangers and pilgrims, abftain from fleshly lufts, which war against the foul;
