2 Did ever thy propitious ear
The humble plea disdain?

Or when did plaintive misery sigh,
Or supplicate in vain?

3 Oppressed with grief and shame, dissolved In penitential tears,

Thy goodness calms our anxious doubts,
And dissipates our fears.

4 From that blest source, propitious hope
Appears serenely bright,

And sheds her soft and cheering beam
O'er sorrow's dismal night.

5 Our hearts adore thy mercy, Lord,
And bless the friendly ray,
Which ushers in the smiling morn
Of everlasting day.

Wanderers recovered. Ps. 119.

1 LORD, we have wandered from thy way,
Like foolish sheep have gone astray,
Our pleasant pastures we have left,
And of their guard our souls bereft.

2 Exposed to want, exposed to harm,
Far from our gentle Shepherd's arm;
Nor will these fatal wanderings cease,
Till thou reveal the paths of peace.
3 O seek thy thoughtless servants, Lord,
Nor let us quite forget thy word;
Our erring feet do thou restore,
And keep us, that we stray no more.

Vain Repentances.

1 TIMES without number have I prayed, This only once forgive;

Relapsing when thy hand was stayed,
And suffered me to live:

2 Yet now the kingdom of thy peace,
Lord, to my heart restore;
Forgive my vain repentances,
And bid me sin no more.

[blocks in formation]

Freedom from Sin and Misery in Heaven.

1 OUR sins, alas! how strong they be! And, like a violent sea,

They break our duty, Lord, to thee,
And hurry us away.

2 The waves of trouble, how they rise!
How loud the tempests roar !
But death shall land our weary souls
Safe on the heavenly shore.

3 There, to fulfil his sweet commands,
Our speedy feet shall move;
No sin shall clog our winged zeal,
Or cool our burning love.

4 There shall we sit, and sing, and tell The wonders of his grace;

Till heavenly raptures fire our hearts,
And smile in every face.

DEVOUT ASPIRATIONS AND AFFECTIONS.

The Lord's Prayer.

1 OUR heavenly Father, hear
The prayer we offer now:
Thy name be hallowed far and near,
To thee all nations bow.

2 Thy kingdom come; thy will
On earth be done in love,
As saints and seraphim fulfil
Thy perfect law above.

3 Our daily bread supply,
While by thy word we live;
The guilt of our iniquity
Forgive as we forgive.

4 From dark temptation's power
Our feeble hearts defend;
Deliver in the evil hour,
And guide us to the end.

5 Thine, then, forever be
Glory and power divine;

The sceptre, throne, and majesty
Of heaven and earth are thine.

The Lord's Prayer.

1 FATHER, adored in worlds above!
Thy glorious name be hallowed still;
Thy kingdom come in truth and love;
And earth, like heaven, obey thy will.

2 Lord, make our daily wants thy care;
Forgive the sins which we forsake:
In thy compassion let us share,
As fellow-men of ours partake.

3 Evils beset us every hour;

Thy kind protection we implore;
Thine is the kingdom, thine the power,
The glory thine for evermore.

Habitual Devotion.

1 WHILE thec I seek, protecting Power!
Be my vain wishes stilled;
And may this consecrated hour
With better hopes be filled.

2 Thy love the powers of thought bestowed;
To thee my thoughts would soar;
Thy mercy o'er my life has flowed-
That mercy I adore!

3 In each event of life, how clear
Thy ruling hand I see!

Each blessing to my soul more dear,
Because conferred by thee.

4 In every joy that crowns my days,
In every pain I bear,

My heart shall find delight in praise,
Or seek relief in prayer.

5 When gladness wings my favored hour, Thy love my thoughts shall fill; Resigned, when storms of sorrow lower, My soul shall meet thy will.

6 My lifted eye, without a tear,
The gathering storm shall see;

My steadfast heart shall know no fear;-
That heart shall rest on thee!

Seeking the Presence of God.

1 CONTINUE, Lord, to hear my voice,
Whene'er to thee I cry;

In mercy all my prayers receive,
Nor my request deny.

2 When us to seek thy glorious face
Thou kindly dost advise,-
Thy glorious face I'll always seek,
My grateful heart replies.

3 I trusted that my future life

Should with thy love be crowned;
Or else my fainting soul had sunk,
With sorrow compassed round.

4 God's time with patient faith expect,
And he'll inspire thy breast

With inward strength: do thou thy part, And leave to him the rest.
