and hath given to us the ministry of reconciliation; To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; and hath committed unto us the word of reconciliation. Now

then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though God did beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be ye reconciled to God. For he hath made him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in him, 2 Cor. v. 18-21. And he is the propitiation for our sins and not for our's only, but also for the sins of the whole world, 1 John ii. 2. See also on chap. v. ver. 25.

VER. 52.

'Eμáxorro our πpèç åλλýλouç oi 'loudato, λέγοντες· Πῶς δύναται οὗτος ἡμῖν δοῦναι τὴν σάρκα φαγεῖν ;

The Jews therefore strove among themselves, suying, How can this man give us his flesh to eat?

VER. 53.

Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, a Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, bye have no life in you.

a See on chap. iii. ver. 18. clause 2. b See on chap. v. ver. 25.

VER. 54.

Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day.

a See on ver. 39. clauses 3, 4.
VER 55.

A. D. 32.

He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, a dwelleth in me, and I in him.

a At that day ye shall know that I am in my Father, and ye in me, and I in you, John xiv. 20. Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come unto him, and make our abode with

him, 23. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no I am the vine, ye are the branches: more can ye, except ye abide in me. He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing, xv. 4, 5. That they all may be one; as thou, Father, art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us : that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them; that they may be one, even as we are one: I in them, and thou in me, that they may be made perfect in one; and that the world may know that thou hast sent me, and hast loved them as thou hast loved me, xvii. 21-23. And what agreement hath the temple of God with idols? for ye are the temple of the living God; as God hath said, I will dwell in them, and walk in them; and I will be their God, and they shall be my people, 2 Cor. vi. 16. That Christ may dwell in your hearts by faith; that ye, being rooted and grounded in love, Eph. iii. 17. And he that keepeth his commandments dwelleth in him, and he in him. And hereby we know that he abideth in us, by the Spirit which he hath given God at any time. If we love one us, 1 John iii. 24. No man hath seen another, God dwelleth in us, and his love is perfected in us, iv. 12. Whosoever shall confess that Jesus is the Son of God, God dwelleth in him, and he in God, 15.

VER. 57.

For my flesh is meat indeed, and my καγώ ζῶ διὰ τὸν πατέρα· καὶ ὁ τρώγων με,

blood is drink indeed.

VER. 56.

a As the living Father hath sent me, band I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me.

And it came to pass, while he blessed them, he was parted from them, and carried up into heaven, Luke xxiv. 51. and Acts i. 9. See on chap. iii. ver. 13. clause 1.

VER. 63.

a It is the spirit that quickeneth; the flesh profiteth nothing: the words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life.

These things said he in the synagogue, as he taught in Capernaum.

VER. 60.

Πολλοὶ οὖν ἀκούσαντες ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ, εἶπον· Σκληρός ἐστιν οὗτος ὁ λόγος τίς δύναται αὐτοῦ ἀκούειν ;

Many therefore of his disciples, when they had heard this, said, This is an hard saying; who can hear it?

VER. 61.

b For circumcision verily profiteth, if thou keep the law : but if thou be a breaker of the law, thy circumcision is made uncircumcision. Therefore if the uncircumcision keep the righ

teousness of the law, shall not his uncircumcision be counted for circumcision? And shall not uncircumcision which is by nature, if it fulfil the law, judge thee, who by the letter and circumcision dost transgress the law ? For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision, which is outward in the flesh; But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the a See on Matt. ix. ver. 4. clause 1. letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God, Rom. ii. 25-29.

VER. 62.

Ἐὰν οὖν θεωρεῖτε τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἀναβαίνοντα ὅπου ἦν τὸ πρότερον ; a What and if ye shall see the Son of man ascend up b where he was before?

a I came forth from the Father, and am come into the world: again, I leave the world, and go to the Father, John xvi. 28. And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name

Lord, to whom shall we go? thou hast the words of eternal life, ver. 68. Thy word hath quickened me, Psal. cxix. 50. I will never forget thy precepts: for with them thou hast quickened me, 93. So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God, Rom. x. 17.

But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you, 26. For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast, Eph. ii. 8, 9. For unto you it is given in the behalf of Christ, not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake, Phil. i. 29. a The words that I speak unto you, they are spirit, and they are life, ver. 63. And ye will not come to me, that ye might have life, v. 40. Neither is there salvation in any other : for there is none other name under heaven given among men, whereby this is the record, that God hath given we must be saved, Acts iv. 12. And to us eternal life, and this life is in his Son. He that hath the Son hath life; and he that hath not the Son of God hath not life. These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God, 1 John v. 11—13.

He spake of Judas Iscariot the son of Simon: for he it was that should betray him, being one of the twelve.

Let his days be few; and let another take his office, Psal. cix. 6-8. Now this man purchased a field with the reward of iniquity; and falling headlong, he burst asunder in the midst, and all his bowels gushed out. And it was known unto all the dwellers at Jerusalem; insomuch as that field is called in their proper tongue, Aceldama, that is to say, the field of blood. On the first day shall be an holy convocation: ye shall do no servile work therein. Also in the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when ye have gathered in the fruit of the land, ye shall keep a feast unto the LORD seven days: on the first day shall be a sabbath, and on the eighth day shall be a sabbath. And ye shall take you on the first day the boughs of goodly trees, branches of palm trees, and the boughs of thick trees, and willows of the brook; and ye shall rejoice before the LORD your God seven days. And ye shall keep it a feast unto the LORD seven days in the year. It shall be a statute for ever in your generations: ye shall celebrate it in the seventh month. Ye shall dwell in booths seven days; all that are Israelites born shall dwell in know that I made the children of booths: That your generations may

Seven days shalt thou keep a solemn feast unto the LORD thy God in the place which the LORD shall choose: because the LORD thy God shall bless thee in all thine increase, and in all the works of thine hands, therefore, thou shalt surely rejoice. Three times in the year shall all thy males appear before the LORD thy God in the place which he shall choose; in the feast of unleavened bread, and in the feast of weeks, and in the feast of tabernacles: and they shall not appear before the LORD empty: Every man shall give as he is able, according to the blessing of the LORD thy God which he hath given thee, Deut. xvi. 13-17.
