These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God, that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God, v. 13. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are. While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the Scripture might be fulfilled, John xvii. 11, 12. Yea, he loved the people : all his saints are in thy hand: and they sat down at thy feet; every one shall receive of thy words, Deut. xxxiii. 3. And the Lord said, Simon, Simon, behold, Satan hath desired to have you, that he may sift you as wheat: But I have prayed for thee, that thy faith fail not: and when thou art converted, strengthen thy brethren, Luke xxii. 31, 32. of this bread shall live for ever, 58. | had been of us, they would no doubt For the LORD loveth judgment, and have continued with us: but they went forsaketh not his saints; they are pre-out, that they might be made manifest served for ever; but the seed of the wicked shall be cut off, Psal. xxxvii. 28. They that trust in the LORD shall be as mount Zion, which cannot be removed, but abideth for ever. As the mountains are round about Jerusalem, so the LORD is round about his people from henceforth even for ever. For the rod of the wicked shall not rest upon the lot of the righteous; lest the righteous put forth their hands unto iniquity, cxxv. 1-3. But Israel shall be saved in the LORD with an everlasting salvation: ye shall not be ashamed nor confounded world without end, Isa. xlv. 17. No weapon that is formed against thee shall prosper; and every tongue that shall rise against thee in judgment thou shalt condemn. This is the heritage of the servants of the LORD, and their righteousness is of me, saith the LORD, liv. 17. The LORD hath appeared of old unto me, saying, Yea, I have loved thee with an everlasting love: therefore with lovingkindness have I drawn thee, Jer. xxxi. 3. And I will make an everlasting covenant with them, that I will not turn away from them, to do them good; but I will put my fear in their hearts, that they shall not depart from me, xxxii. 40. For false Christs and false prophets shall rise, and shall shew signs and wonders to seduce, if it were possible, even the elect. But take ye heed: behold, I have told you all things, Mark xiii. 22, 23. Being confident of this very thing, that he which hath begun a good work in you will perform it until the day of Jesus Christ, Phil. i. 6. For ye are dead, and your life is hid with Christ in God. When Christ, who is our life, shall appear, then shall ye also appear with him in glory, Col. iii. 3, 4. But we are bound to give thanks alway to God for you, brethren beloved of the Lord, because God hath from the beginning chosen you to salvation through sanctification of the Spirit and belief of the truth; Whereunto he called you by our Gospel, to the obtaining of the glory of our Lord Jesus Christ, 2 Thess. ii. 13, 14. Now I know that the LORD is greater than all gods: for in the thing wherein they dealt proudly he was above them, Exod. xviii. 11. VER. 30. Ἐγὼ καὶ ὁ πατὴρ ἓν ἐσμεν. a But if I do, though ye believe not me, believe the works; that ye may know, and believe, that the Father is in me, and I in him, ver. 38. He that hath seen me hath seen the Father; and how sayest thou then, Shew us the Father? Believest thou not that I am in the Father, and the Fa ther in me? The words that I speak unto you I speak not of myself: but the Father that dwelleth in me, he doeth the works. Believe me that I am in the Father, and the Father in me: or else believe me for the very works' sake, xiv. 9-11. Jesus answered and said unto him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will | come unto him, and make our abode with him, 25. All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you, xvi. 15. That they all may be one; as thou, Father. art in me, and I in thee, that they also may be one in us: that the world may believe that thou hast sent me. And the glory which thou gavest me I have given them: that they may be one, even as we are one: xvii. 21, 22. Now a certain man was sick, named Lazarus, of Bethany, the town of Mary and her sister Martha. a Now it came to pass, as they went, that he entered into a certain village: and a certain woman named Martha received him into her house. And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word, Luke x. 38, 39. VER. 2. (Ην δὲ Μαρία ἡ ἀλείψασα τὸν Κύριον μύρω, καὶ ἐκμάξασα τους πόδας αὐτοῦ ταῖς πριξὶν αὐτῆς· ἧς ὁ ἀδελφὸς Λάζαρος ἠσθένει.) (It was that Mary which anointed the Lord with ointment, and wiped his A. D. 33. feet with her hair, whose brother Lazarus was sick.) a Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment, John xii. 3. VER. 3. ̓Απέστειλαν οὖν αἱ ἀδελφαὶ πρὸς αὐτὸν, λέγουσαι· Κύριε, ἴδε, ὃν φιλεῖς, ἀσθενεῖ. Therefore his sisters sent unto him, saying, Lord, behold, he whom thou lovest is sick. VER. 4. ̓Ακούσας δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς, εἶπεν· Αὕτη ἡ ἀσθένεια οὐκ ἔστι πρὸς θάνατον, ἀλλ ̓ ὑπὲς τῆς δόξης τοῦ Θεοῦ, ἵνα δοξασθῇ ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ Θεοῦ δι' αὐτῆς. When Jesus heard that, he said, This sickness is not unto death, a but for the glory of God, that the Son of God might be glorified thereby. a See on chap. ix. ver. 3. clause 2. VER. 5. Ηγάπα δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς τὴν Μάρθαν, καὶ τὴν ἀδελφὴν αὐτῆς, καὶ τὸν Λάζαρον. Now Jesus loved Martha, and her sister, and Lazarus. VER. 6. Ὡς οὖν ἤκουσεν ὅτι ἀσθενεῖ, τότε μὲν ἔμεινεν ἐν ᾧ ἂν τόπῳ δύο ἡμέρας. When he had heard therefore that he was sick, he abode two days still in the same place where he was. VER. 7. Επειτα μετὰ τοῦτο λέγει τοῖς μαθηταῖς "Αγωμεν εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίων πάλιν. ciples, Let us go into Judæa again. Then after that saith he to his dis VER. 8. Λέγουσιν αὐτῷ οἱ μαθηταί· Ραββί, νῦν ἐζήτουν σε λιθάσαι οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι, καὶ πάλιν ὑπάγεις ἐκεῖ; His disciples say unto him, a Master, the Jews of late sought to stone thee ; and goest thou thither again? a Then the Jews took up stones again to stone himy John x. 31. ̓Απεκρίθη ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Οὐχὶ δώδεκά εἰσιν ὥρας τῆς ἡμέρας ; ἐάν τις περιπατῇ ἐν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ, οὐ προσκόπτει· ὅτι τὸ φῶς τοῦ κόσμου τούτου βλέπει. Jesus answered, Are there not twelve hours in the day? If any man walk in the day, he stumbleth not, because he seeth the light of this world. VER. 10. Ἐὰν δέ τις περιπατῇ ἐν τῇ νυκτὶ, προστ κόπτει· ὅτι τὸ φῶς οὐκ ἔστιν ἐν αὐτῷ. But if any man walk in the night, he stumbleth, because there is no light in him. VER. 11. Ταῦτα εἶπε· καὶ μετὰ τοῦτο λέγει αὐτ τοῖς· Λάζαρος ὁ φίλος ἡμῶν κεκοίμηται· ἀλλὰ πορεύομαι ἵνα ἐξυπνίσω αὐτόν. These things said he : and after that he saith unto them, a Our friend Lazarus sleepeth; But I go, that I may awake him out of sleep. a See on Matt. ix. ver. 24. : b Verily, verily, I say unto you, The hour is coming, and now is, when the dead shall hear the voice of the Son of God and they that hear shall live. For as the Father hath life in | himself, so hath he given to the Son to have life in himself; And hath given him authority to execute judg ment also, because he is the Son of Marvel not at this: for the hour is coming, in the which all that are in the graves shall hear his voice, And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation, John v. 25-29. man. VER. 12. Εἶπον οὖν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ· Κύριε, εν κεκοίμηται, σωθήσεται. Then said his disciples, Lord, if he sleep, he shall do well. VER. 13. Εἰρήκει δὲ ὁ Ἰησοῦς περὶ τοῦ θανάτου αὐτοῦ· ἐκεῖνοι δὲ ἔδοξαν ὅτι περὶ τῆς κοιμή σέως τοῦ ὕπνου λέγει A. D. 33. they thought that he hard spoken of tak ing of rest in sleep. VER. 15. Καὶ χαίρω δι ̓ ὑμᾶς, (ἵνα πιστεύσητε,) ὅτι οὐκ ἤμην ἐκεῖ· ἀλλ ̓ ἄγωμεν πρὸς αὐτόν. And I am glad for your sakes that I was not there, to the intent ye may believe; nevertheless let us go unto him. VER. 16. Εἶπεν οὖν Θῶμας, ὁ λεγόμενος Δίδυμος τοῖς συμμαθηταῖς· "Αγωμεν καὶ ἡμεῖς, ἵνα ἀποθάνωμεν μετ ̓ αὐτοῦ. Didymus, unto his fellow disciples, Let Then said Thomas, which is called us also go, that we may die with him. VER. 17. Ελθὼν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς, εὗρεν αὐτὸν τέσσαρας ἡμέρας ἤδη ἔχοντα ἐν τῷ μνημείῳ. Then when Jesus came, he found that he had lain in the grave four days already. VER. 18. *Ην δὲ ἡ Βηθανία ἐγγὺς τῶν ̔Ιεροσολύ μων, ὡς ἀπὸ σταδίων δεκαπέντε. lem, about fifteen furlongs off.
