Then a Pilate entered into the judgsaid unto him, Art thou the king of the ment-hall again, and called Jesus, and

̓Απεκρίθη αὐτῷ ὁ Ἰησοῦς· ̓Αφ ̓ ἑαυτοῦ σὺ τοῦτο λέγεις, ἢ ἄλλοι σοι εἶπον περὶ ἐμοῦ;

Jesus answered him, sayest thou this thing of thyself, or did others tell it thee of me?

VER. 35.

̓Απεκρίθη ὁ Πιλάτος· Μήτι ἐγὼ Ἰου δαῖός εἰμι ; τὸ ἔθνος τὸ σὸν καὶ οἱ ̓Αρχιε ρεῖς παρέδωκάν σε ἐμοί· τί ἐποίησας;

Pilate answered, Am I a Jew? aThine own nation and the Chief Priests have delivered thee unto me: what hast thou

done?

VER. 36.

̓Απεκρίθη ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Ἡ βασιλεία ἡ ἐμὴ οὐκ ἐστιν ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου τούτου· εἰ ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου τούτου ἦν ἡ βασιλεία ἡ ἐμὴ, οἱ ὑπηρέται ἂν οἱ ἐμοὶ ἠγωνίζοντο ἵνα μὴ παρα δοθῶ τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις· νῦν δὲ ἡ βασιλεία ἡ ἐμὴ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐντεῦθεν.

of this world: if my kingdom were of Jesus answered, a My kingdom is not this world, then would my servants fight, that I should not be delivered to the Jews: but now is my kingdom not from hence.

Εἶπεν οὖν αὐτῷ ὁ Πιλάτος· Οὐκ οὖν βασιλεὺς εἶ σύ; ̓Απεκρίθη ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Σὺ λέγεις ὅτι βασιλεύς εἰμι ἐγώ· ἐγὼ εἰς τοῦτο γεγέννημαι, καὶ εἰς τοῦτο ἐλήλυθα εἰς τὸν κόσμον, ἵνα μαρτυρήσω τῇ ἀληθείᾳ· πᾶς ὁ ὢν ἐκ τῆς ἀληθείας, ἀκούει μοῦ τῆς φωνῆς.

a Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was 1 born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice.

Ἐκραύγασαν οὖν πάλιν πάντες, λέγοντες· Μὴ τοῦτον, ἀλλὰ τὸν Βαραββάν· ἦν δὲ ὁ Βαραββᾶς ληστής.

a Then cried they all again, saying, Not this man, but Barabbas. Now Barabbas was a robber.

CHAP. XIX.-VER. 1.

Τότε οὖν ἔλαβεν ὁ Πιλάτος τὸν Ἰησοῦν, καὶ ἐμαστίγωσε.

VER. 2.

Καὶ οἱ στρατιῶται πλέξαντες στέφανον ἐξ ἀκανθῶν, ἐπέθηκαν αὐτοῦ τῇ κεφαλῇ, καὶ ἱμάτιον πορφυροῦν περιέβαλον αὐτόν.

a And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on his head, and they put on him a purple`robe.

VER. 3.

Καὶ ἔλεγον· Χαῖρε ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων· καὶ ἔδίδουν αὐτῷ ῥαπίσματα.

* And said, Hail, King of the Jews! and they smote him with their hands.

VER. 4.

Ἐξῆλθεν οὖν πάλιν ἔξω ὁ Πιλάτος, καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· Ιδε, ἄγω ὑμῖν αὐτὸν ἔξω, ἵνα γνῶτε ὅτι ἐν αὐτῷ οὐδεμίαν αἰτίαν ευρίσκω.

Pilate therefore went forth again, and saith unto them, Behold, I bring him forth to you, that ye may know that s 1 find no fault in him.

VER. 5.

Ἐξῆλθεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἔξω, φορῶν τὸν ἀκάνθινον στέφανον, καὶ τὸ πορφυροῦν ἱμά του. Καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· Ἴδε ὁ ἄνθρωπος.

Then came Jesus forth, wearing the crown of thorns, and the purple robe. And Pilate saith unto them, Behold the

man!

VER. 6.

Ὅτι οὖν εἶδον αὐτὸν οἱ ̓Αρχιερεῖς καὶ οἱ ὑπηρέται, ἐκραύγασαν, λέγοντες" Σταύρω σον, σταύρωσον. Λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Πιλάτος" Λάβετε αὐτὸν ὑμεῖς, καὶ σταυρώσατε· ἐγὼ γὰρ οὐχ εὑρίσκω ἐν αὐτῷ αἰτίαν.

a When the Chief Priests therefore and officers saw him, they cried out, saying, Crucify him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Take ye him, and cru

cify him ; for I find no fault in him.

VER. 7.

̓Απεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι· Ἡμεῖς νόμον ἔχομεν, καὶ κατὰ τὸν νόμον ἡμῶν ὀφείλει ἀποθανεῖν, ὅτι ἑαυτὸν υἱὸν τοῦ Θεοῦ ἐποίησεν.

The Jews answered him, a We have a law, and by our law he ought to die, because he made himself the Son of God. a See on chap. viii. ver. 59. clause 1. bSee on Matt. xiv. ver. 35. clause 2.

VER. 8.

Οτε οὖν ἤκουσεν ὁ Πιλάτος τοῦτον τὸν λόγον, μᾶλλον ἐφοβήθη.

When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he was the more afraid ;

VER. 9.

Καὶ εἰσῆλθεν εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον πάλιν, καὶ λέγει τῷ Ἰησοῦ· Πόθεν εί σύ; Ὁ δὲ Ἰησοῦς ἀπόκρισιν οὐκ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ.

And went again into the judgment

̓Απεκρίθη ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Οὐκ εἶχες ἐξουσίαν οὐδεμίαν κατ' ἐμοῦ, εἰ μὴ ἦν σοὶ δεδομένον ἄνωθεν· διὰ τοῦτο, ὁ παραδιδούς με σοί, μείζονα ἁμαρτίαν ἔχει.

Jesus answered, Thou couldest have no power at all against me, except it were given thee from above: therefore he that delivered me unto thee hath the greater sin.

VER. 12.

Ἐκ τούτου ἐζήτει ὁ Πιλάτος ἀπολῦσαι αὐτόν· οἱ δὲ Ἰουδαῖοι ἔκραζον, λέγοντες· Ἐὰν τοῦτον ἀπολύσης, οὐκ εἶ φίλος τοῦ Καίσαρος· πᾶς ὁ βασιλέα αὑτὸν ποιῶν, ἀντιλέγει τῷ Καίσαρι.

And from thenceforth Pilate sought to release him : but the Jews cried out, saying, If thou let this man go, thou art not Casar's friend: whosoever maketh himself a King, speaketh against Cesur.

Οἱ δὲ ἐκραύγασαν· "Αξον, ἄρον, σταύρωσον αὐτόν· Λέγει αὐτοῖς ὁ Πιλάτος· Τὸν βασιλέα ὑμῶν σταυρώσω; Απεκρίθησαν οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς· Οὐκ ἔχομεν βασιλέα εἰ μὴ Καίσαρα.

But they cried out, a Away with him, away with him, crucify him. Pilate saith unto them, Shall I crucify your King? The Chief Priests answered, We have no king but Cæsar.

VER. 19.

Ἔγραψε δὲ καὶ τίτλον ὁ Πιλάτος, καὶ ΙΗΣΟΥΣ Ο ΝΑΖΩΡΑΙΟΣ Ο ΒΑΣΙΛΕΥΣ ἔθηκεν ἐπὶ τοῦ σταυροῦ ἦν· δὲ γεγραμμένον·

ΤΩΝ ΙΟΥΔΑΙΩΝ.

a And Pilate wrote a title, and put it on the cross. And the writing was, JESUS OF NAZARETH THE KING OF THE JEWS.

Then said the Chief Priests of the Jews to Pilate, Write not, The King of the Jews ; but that he said, I am King of the Jews.

VER. 26.

Ἰησοῦς οὖν ἰδὼν τὴν μητέρα, καὶ τὸν μαθητὴν παρεστῶτα, ἂν ἠγάπα, λέγει τῇ μητρὶ αὐτοῦ· Γύναι, ἰδοὺ ὁ υἱός σου.

When Jesus therefore saw his mother, a and the disciple standing by, whom he ̓Απεκρίθη ὁ Πιλάτος· Ο γέγραφα, γέ- - loved, he saith unto his mother, ο Woman, behold thy son!

Οτε οὖν ἔλαβε τὸ ὄξος ὁ ̓Ιησοῦς, εἶπε· Τετέλεσται καὶ κλίνας τὴν κεφαλὴν, παρέδωκε τὸ πνεῦμα.

VER. 31.

Οἱ οὖν Ἰουδαῖοι, ἵνα μὴ μείνῃ ἐπὶ τοῦ σταυροῦ τὰ σώματα ἐν τῷ σαββάτω, ἐπεὶ παρασκευὴ ἦν, (ἦν γὰρ μεγάλη ἡ ἡμέρα ἐκείνου τοῦ σαββάτου,) ἠρώτησαν τὸν Πι λάτον ἵνα κατεαγῶσιν αὐτῶν τὰ σκέλη, καὶ ἄρθωσιν.

The Jews therefore, because it was the preparation, that the bodies should not remain upon the cross on the sabbath day (for that sabbath day was an high day,) besought Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

a And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree: His body shall not remain all night upon the tree, but thou shalt in any wise bury him that day (for he that is hanged is accursed of God); that thy land be not defiled, which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, Deut. xxi. 22, 23.

But one of the soldiers with a spear pierced his side, and forthwith came thereout blood and water.

This is he that came by water and blood, even Jesus Christ; not by water only, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit that beareth witness, because the Spirit is truth. For there are three that bear record in heaven, the Father, the Word, and the Holy Ghost: and these three are one. And there are three that bear witness in earth, the spirit, and the water, and the blood: and these three agree in one, 1 John v. 6-8.

VER. 35.

Καὶ ὁ ἑωρακὼς μεμαρτύρηκε, καὶ ἀλή θινὴ αὐτοῦ ἐστιν ἡ μαρτυρία· κακεῖνος οἶδεν ὅτι ἀληθῆ λέγει ἵνα ὑμεῖς πιστεύσητε.

a And he that saw it bare record, and his record is true: and he knoweth that he saith true, that ye might believe.

a When Jesus therefore saw his mo whom he loved, he saith unto his mother, and the disciple standing by ther, Woman, behold thy son! ver. 26. This is the disciple which testifieth of these things, and wrote these things: and we know that his testimony is true, xxi. 24.

VER. 36.

Ἐγένετο γὰρ ταῦτα ἵνα ἡ γραφὴ πλή ρωθῇ· Οστοῦν οὐ συντριβήσεται αὐτοῦ.

a For these things were done, that the Scripture should be fulfilled, b A bone of him shall not be broken.

Καὶ πάλιν ἑτέρα γραφὴ λέγει· Οψονται εἰς ὃν ἐξεκέντησαν.

And again another Scripture saith, They shall look on him whom they pierced.
