Then certain philosophers of the Epicureans, and of the Stoicks, encountered him. And some said, What will this * bubbler say? other some, He seemeth to be a setter forth of strange gods: because he preached unto them Jesus,

a And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked; and others said, We will hear thee again of this matter, Acts xvii. 32. And now I stand and am judged for the hope of the promise made of God unto our fathers: Unto which promise our twelve tribes, instantly serving God day and night, hope to come. For which hope's sake, king Agrippa, I am accused of the Jews. Why should it be thought a thing incredible with you, that God should raise the dead? xxvi. 6-8. But is now made manifest by the appearing of our Saviour Jesus Christ, who hath abolished death, and hath brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel, 2 Tim. i. 10.

a For after that, in the wisdom of God, the world by wisdom knew not God, it pleased God by the foolishness of preaching to save them that believe, 1 Cor. i. 21. For though there be that are called gods, whether in heaven or in earth, (as there be gods many and lords many), viii. 5. In whom the god of this world hath blinded the minds of them which believe not, lest the light of the glorious Gospel of Christ, who is the image of God, should shine unto them. For we preach not ourselves, but Christ Jesus the Lord; and ourselves your servants for Jesus sake. For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ, 2 Cor. iv. 4-6. Howbeit then, when ye knew not God, ye did service unto them which by nature are no gods, Gal. iv. 8.

a And hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth, and hath determined the times before appointed, and the bounds of their habitation;

a And Adam called his wife's name Eve; because she was the mother of all living, Gen. iii. 20. These are the three sons of Noah: and of them was the whole earth overspread, ix. 19.

b Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee; thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass, Job xiv. 5.

VER. 27.

For with thee is the fountain of life : in thy light shall we see light, Peal. xxxvi. 9. moved, lxvi. 8, 9. For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: And he is before all things, and by him all things consist, Col. i. 16, 17. Who being the brightness of his glory, and the express image of his person, and upholding all things by the word of his power, Heb. i. 3.

VER. 29.

Forusmuch then as we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold, or stone, graven by art and man's device.

* Who hath measured the waters in the hollow of his hand, and meted out heaven with the span, and comprehended the dust of the earth in a measure, and weighed the mountains in scales, and the hills in a balance? Who hath directed the Spirit of the LoRD, or being his counsellor, hath taught him? With whom took he counsel, and who instructed him, and taught him in the path of judgment, and taught him knowledge, and shewed to him the way of understanding? Behold, the nations are as a drop of a bucket, and are counted as the small dust of the balance: behold, he taketh up the isles as a very little thing. And Lebanon is not suf. ficient to burn, nor the beasts thereof sufficient for a burnt-offering. All nations before him are as nothing; and they are counted to him less than nothing and vanity. To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him? The workman melteth a graven image, and the goldsmith spreadeth it over with gold, and casteth silver chains, Isa. xl.

12-19.

VER. 30.

Yea, ye yourselves know, that these hands have ministered unto my necessities, and to them that were with me, Acts xx. 34. Even unto this present hour we both hunger and thirst, and are naked, and are buffeted, and have no certain dwellingplace; And labour, working with our own hands: being reviled, we bless; being persecuted, we suffer it, 1 Cor. iv. 11, 12. For ye remember, brethren, our labour and travail: for labouring night and day, because we would not be chargeable unto any of you, we preached unto you the Gospel of God, 1 Thess. ii. 9. Neither did we eat any man's bread for nought; but wrought with labour and travail night and day, that we might not be chargeable to any of you: Not because we have not power, but to make ourselves an ensample unto you to follow us, 2 Thess. iii. 8, 9.

a And when Silas and Timotheus were come from Macedonia, Paul was pressed in the spirit, and testified to the Jews that Jesus was Christ.

*Or, is the Christ.

2 But when the Jews of Thessalonica had knowledge that the word of God was preached of Paul at Berea, they came thither also, and stirred up the people. And then immediately the brethren sent away Paul, to go as it were to the sea: but Silas and Timotheus abode there still. And they that conducted Paul brought him unto Athens : and receiving a com mandment unto Silas and Timotheus, for to come to him with all speed, they departed, Acts xvii. 13-15. For the Son of God, Jesus Christ, who was preached among you by us, even by me and Silvanus and Timotheus, was not yea and nay, but in him was yea, 2 Cor. i. 19. And when I was present with you, and wanted, I was chargeable to no man: for that which was lacking to me, the brethren which came from Macedonia supplied: and in all things I have kept myself from being burdensome unto you, and so will I keep myself, xi. 9.

VER. 6.

a And when they opposed themselves, and blasphemed, he shook his raiment, and said unto them, Your blood be upon your own heads; I am clean: from henceforth I will go unto the Gentiles.

a But when the Jews saw the multitudes, they were filled with envy, and spake against those things which were spoken by Paul, contradicting and blaspheming. Then Paul and Barnabas waxed bold, and said, It was necessary that the word of God should first have been spoken to you: but seeing ye put it from you, and judge yourselves unworthy of ever ̔Ως δὲ κατῆλθεν ἀπὸ τῆς Μακεδονίας | lasting life, lo, we turn to the Genὅτε Σίλας καὶ ὁ Τιμόθεος, συνείχετο τῷ | tiles, Acts xiv. 45, 46.

And I will deliver thee out of the hand of the wicked, and I will redeem thee out of the hand of the terrible, Jer. xv. 20, 21. And ye shall be hated of all men for my name's sake. But there shall not an hair of your head perish, Luke xxi. 17, 18. What shall we then say to these things? If God be for us, who can be against us ? Rom. viii. 31.
