Ο δὲ Παῦλος ἔτι προσμείνας ἡμέρας ἱκανὰς, τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς ἀποταξάμενος, ἐξέπλει εἰς τὴν Συρίαν· καὶ σὺν αὐτῷ Πρίσκιλλα καὶ ̓Ακύλας, κειράμενος τὴν κεφαλὴν ἐν Κεγχρεαῖς· εἶχε γὰρ εὐχήν.

And Paul after this tarried there yet a good while, and then took his leave of the brethren, and sailed thence into Syvia, and with him a Priscilla and Aquila, b having shorn his head in Cenchrea: for he had a vow.

All the days of his separation shall he eat nothing that is made of the vine tree, from the kernels even to the husk. All the days that he separateth himself unto the LORD he shall come at no dead body. He shall not make himself unclean for his father, or for his mother, for his brother, or for his sister, when they die; because the consecration of his God

I commend unto you Phebe our sister, which is a servant of the Church which is at Cenchrea: That ye receive her in the Lord, as becometh saints, and that ye assist her in whatsoever business she hath need of you: for she hath been a succourer of many, and of myself also, Rom. xvi. 1, 2.

And he came to Ephesus, and left them there: but he himself entered into the synagogue, and reasoned with the

Jews.

Ερωτώντων δὲ αὐτῶν ἐπὶ πλείονα χρόνον μεῖναι παρ ̓ αὑτοῖς, οὐκ ἐπένευσεν

When they desired him to tarry lenger time with them, he consented not;

VER. 21.

πάντως τὴν ἑορτὴν τὴν ἐρχομένην ποιέσαι ̓Αλλ ̓ ἀπετάξατο αὐτοῖς, εἰπών· Δεν με εἰς Ἱεροσόλυμα· πάλιν δὲ ἀνακάμψα πρὸς ὑμᾶς, τοῦ Θεοῦ θέλοντος. Καὶ ἀνήχθη ἀπὸ τῆς Ἐφέσου.

But bade them farewell, saying, I cometh in Jerusalem: but I will retura must by all means keep this feast that again unto you, if God will. And he sailed from Ephesus.

But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord will; and will know, not the speech of them which are puffed up, but the power, 1 Cor. iv. 19. But I trust in the Lord that I also myself shall come shortly, Phil. ii. 24. And this will we do, if God permit, Heb. vi. 3. Go to now, ye that say, To-day or to-morrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain: Whereas ye know not what shall be on the morrow: For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appeareth for a little time, and then vanisheth away. For that ye ought to say, If the Lord will.

VER. 28.

Εὐτόνως γὰρ τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις διακατηλέγ χετο δημοσίᾳ, ἐπιδεικνὺς διὰ τῶν γραφῶν, εἶναι τὸν Χριστὸν Ἰησοῦν.

For he mightily convinced the Jews, and that publicly, shewing by the Scriptures that Jesus * was Christ.

And it came to pass, that, while Apolios was at Corinth, Paul having passed through the upper coasts came to Ephesus: and finding certain disciples,

And he went into the synagogue, and spake boldly for the space of three months, disputing and persuading the things concerning the kingdom of God.

Ως δέ τινες ἐσκληρύνοντο καὶ ἠπείθουν, κακολογοῦντες τὴν ὁδὸν ἐνώπιον τοῦ πλή θους, ἀποστὰς ἀπ ̓ αὐτῶν, ἀφώρισε τους μαθητὰς, καθ ̓ ἡμέραν διαλεγόμενος ἐν τῇ σκολῇ Τύραννου τινός.

But when divers were hardened, and believed not, but spake evil of that way before the multitude, he departed from them, and separated the disciples, disput ing daily in the school of one Tyrannus.

VER. 10.

Τοῦτο δὲ ἐγένετο ἐπὶ ἔτη δύο, ὥστε πάντας τοὺς κατοικοῦντας τὴν ̓Ασίαν ἀκούσ σαι τὸν λόγον τοῦ Κυρίου Ἰησοῦ, Ἰουδαίους τε καὶ Ἕλληνας.

And this continued by the space of two years; so that all they which dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

VER. 11.

Δυνάμεις τε οὐ τὰς τυχούσας ἐποίει ὁ Θεὸς διὰ τῶν χειρῶν Παύλου

a And God wrought special miracles by the hands of Paul:

a For I will not dare to speak of any of those things which Christ hath not wrought by me, to make the Gentiles obedient, by word and deed, Through mighty signs and wonders, by the power of the Spirit of God: so that from Jerusalem, and round about unto Illyricum, I have fully preached the Gospel of Christ, Rom. xv. 18, 19,

VER. 12.

Ωστε καὶ ἐπὶ τοὺς ἀσθενοῦντας ἐπιφέ ρεσθαι ἀπὸ τοῦ χρωτὸς αὐτοῦ σουδάρια σιμικίνθια, καὶ ἀπαλλάσσεσθαι ἐπ' αὐτ τῶν τὰς νόσους, τά τε πνεύματα τα του νηρὰ ἐξέρχεσθαι ἀπ ̓ αὐτῶν.

So that from his body were brought unto the sick handkerchiefs or aprons,

Καὶ ἐφαλλόμενος ἐπ ̓ αὐτοὺς ὁ ἄνθρωπος ἐν ᾧ ἦν τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ πονηρὸν, καὶ κατακυ ριεύσας αὐτῶν, ἴσχυσε κατ ̓ αὐτῶν, ὥστε γυμνοὺς καὶ τετραυματισμένους ἐκφυγεῖν ἐκ τοῦ οἴκου ἐκείνου.

And the man in whom the evil spirit was, leaped on them, and overcame them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

And many that believed came, and confessed, and shewed their deeds.

VER. 19.

ἱκανοὶ δὲ τῶν τὰ περίεργα πραξάντων, συνενέγκαντες τὰς βίβλους, κατέκαιον ἐνώ πιον πάντων· καὶ συνεψήφισαν τὰς τιμὰς αὐτῶν, καὶ εὗρον ἀργυρίου μυριάδας πέντε.

Many of them also which used curious arts brought their books together, and burned them before all men: and they counted the price of them, and found it fifty thousand pieces of silver.

VER. 20.

Οὕτω κατὰ κράτος ὁ λόγος τοῦ Κυρίου ηὔξανε καὶ ἴσχυεν.

a So mightily grew the word of God and prevailed.

a Moreover, ye see and hear, that not alone at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul hath persuaded and turned away much people, saying that they be no gods, which are made with hands: So that not only this our craft is in danger to be set at nought; but also that the temple of the great goddess Diana should be despised, and her magnificence should be destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worshippeth, ver. 26,27. But I will tarry at Ephesus opened unto me, until Pentecost. For a great door

VER. 21.

'Ως δὲ ἐπληρώθη ταῦτα, ἔθετο ὁ Παῦλος ἐν τῷ πνεύματι, διελθὼν τὴν Μακεδονίαν καὶ ̓Αχαίαν, πορεύεσθαι εἰς Ἱερουσαλήμ, εἰπών. Ὅτι μετὰ τὸ γενέσθαι με ἐκεῖ, δεῖ με καὶ Ρώμην ἰδεῖν.

After these things were ended, a Paul purposed in the spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, After I have been there, I must also see Rore.

a Now I would not have you ignorant, brethren, that oftentimes I purposed to come unto you, (but was let hitherto), that I might have some fruit among you also, even as among other Gentiles, Rom. i. 13. But now having no more place in these parts, and having a great desire these many years to come unto you ; Whensoever I take my journey into Spain, I will

come to you: for I trust to see you in my journey, and to be brought on my way thitherward by you, if first I be some what filled with your company. But now I go unto Jerusalem, to minister unto the saints. For it hath pleased them of Macedonia and Achaia to make a certain contribution for the poor saints which are at Jerusalem, xv. 23-26. And in this confidence I was minded to come unto you before, that ye might have a second benefit: And to pass by you into Macedonia, and to come again out of Macedonia unto you, and of you to be brought on my way toward Judæa, 2 Cor. i. 15, 16.

VER. 22.

̓Αποστείλας δὲ εἰς τὴν Μακεδονίαν δύο τῶν διακονούντων αὐτῷ, Τιμόθεον καὶ Ἔραστον, αὐτὸς ἐπέσχε χρόνον εἰς τὴν ̓Ασίαν. a So he sent into Macedonia two that ministered unto him, Timotheus and Erastus; but he himself stayed in Asia for a season.

a And after the uproar was ceased. Paul called unto him the disciples, and embraced them, and departed, for to go into Macedonia. And when he had gone over those parts, and had given them much exhortation, he came into Greece, Acts xx. 1, 2.

b For this cause have I sent unto you Timotheus, who is my beloved son, and faithful in the Lord, who shall bring you into remembrance of my ways which be in Christ, as I teach every where in every Church. Now some are puffed up, as though I would not come to you. But I will come to you shortly, if the Lord will; and will know, not the speech of them which are puffed up, but the power, 1 Cor. iv. 17-19.

For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, which made silver shrines for Diana, brought no small gain unto the craftsmen ;

VER. 25.

Οὓς συναθροίσας, καὶ τοὺς περὶ τὰ τοι αῦτα ἐργάτας, εἶπεν· "Ανδρες, ἐπίστασθε ὅτι ἐκ ταύτης τῆς ἐργασίας ἡ εὐπορία ἡμῶν ἐστι.

Whom he culled together with the workmen of like occupation, and said, Sirs, ye know that by this craft we have our wealth.

VER. 26.

Καὶ θεωρεῖτε καὶ ἀκούετε ὅτι οὐ μόνον Ἐφέσου, ἀλλὰ σχεδὸν πάσης τῆς ̓Ασίας, ὁ Παῦλος οὗτος πείσας μετέστησεν ἱκανὸν ὄχλον, λέγων ὅτι οὐκ εἰσὶ θεοὶ οἱ διὰ χει ρῶν γινόμενοι.

Οὐ μόνον δὲ τοῦτο κινδυνεύει ἡμῖν τὸ μέ ςος εἰς ἀπελεγμὸν ἐλθεῖν, ἀλλὰ καὶ τὸ τῆς μεγάλης θεάς Αρτέμιδος ἱερὸν εἰς οὐδὲν λου γισθῆναι, μέλλειν δὲ καὶ καθαιρεῖσθαι τὴν μεγαλειότητα αὐτῆς, ἣν ὅλη ἡ ̓Ασία καὶ ἡ οἰκουμένη σέβεται.

VER. 28.

̓Ακούσαντες δὲ, καὶ γενόμενοι πλήρεις θυμοῦ, ἔκραζον λέγοντες· Μεγάλη ή Αρ τεμις Εφεσίων.

And when they heard these sayings they were full of wrath, and cried out,

Εγένετο δὲ κατὰ τὸν καιρὸν ἐκεῖνον τά- saying, Great is Diana of the Ephesians.

ραχος οὐκ ὀλίγος περὶ τῆς ὁδοῦ.

And the same time there arose no small stir about that way.

VER. 29.

Καὶ ἐπλήσθη ἡ πόλις ὅλη συγχύσεως ὥρμησάν τε ὑμοθυμαδὸν εἰς τὸ θέατρον, συναρπάσαντες Γάϊον καὶ ̓Αρίσταρχον Μακεδόνας, συνεκδήμους τοῦ Παύλου.
