ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς τὸν τοιούτον· οὐ γὰς καθῆκον αὐτὸν ζῆν.

And they gave him audience unto this word, and then lifted up their voices, and said, Away with such a fellow from

A. D. GO.

Εὐθέως οὖν ἀπέστησαν ἀπ' αὐτοῦ οἱ

live.

VER. 23. Κραυγαζόντων δὲ αὐτῶν, καὶ ῥιπτούντων τὰ ἱμάτια, καὶ κονιορτὸν βαλλόντων εἰς τὸν ἀέρα,

And as they cried out, and cast off their clothes, and threw dust into the

air,

VER. 24.

Ἐκέλευσεν αὐτὸν ὁ χιλίαρχος ἄγεσθαι εἰς τὴν παρεμβολὴν, εἰπὼν μάστιξιν ἀνετάζεσθαι αὐτόν· ἵνα ἐπιγνῶ δι ̓ ἣν αἰτίαν οὕτως ἐπεφώνουν αὐτῷ.

The chief captain commanded him to be brought into the castle, and bade that he should be examined by scourging ; that he might know wherefore they cried so against him.

VER. 25.

'Ως δὲ προέτεινεν αὐτὸν τοῖς ἱμᾶσιν, εἶπε πρὸς τὸν ἑστῶτα ἑκατόνταρχον ὁ Παῦλος· Εἰ ἄνθρωπον 'Ρωμαῖον καὶ ἀκατάκριτον ἔξεστιν ὑμῖν μαστίζειν;

And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said unto the centurion that stood

by, Is it lawful for you to scourge a man that is a Roman, and uncondemned?

VER. 26.

̓Ακούσας δὲ ὁ ἑκατόνταρχος, προσελθὼν ἀπήγγειλε τῷ χιλιάρχω, λέγων. Ορα τί μέλλεις ποιεῖν· ὁ γὰς ἄνθρωπος οὗτος Pwματός ἐστι.

When the centurion heard that, he went and told the chief captain, saying, Take heed what thou doest : for this man is a Roman.

VER. 27.

Προσελθὼν δὲ ὁ χιλίαρχος εἶπεν αὐτῷ Λέγε μοι, εἰ σὺ ̔Ρωμαῖος εἶ; Ὁ δὲ ἔφη· Ναί.

Then the chief captain came, and said unto him, Tell me, art thou a Roman? He said, Yea.

VER. 28.

̓Απεκρίθη τε ὁ χιλίαρχος· Ἐγὼ πολλοῦ κεφαλαίου τὴν πολιτείαν ταύτην ἐκτησάμην. ̔Ο δὲ Παῦλος ἔφη· Ἐγὼ δὲ καὶ γεγέννημαι.

δὲ ἐφοβήθη, ἐπιγνοὺς ὅτι Ῥωμαῖός ἐστι, καὶ ὅτι ἦν αὐτὸν δεδικώς.

him which should have * examined him : Then straightway they departed from and the chief captain also was afraid, after he knew that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.

* Or, tortured him.

VER. 50.

Τῇ δὲ ἐπαύριον, βουλόμενος γνᾶται τὸ ἀσφαλὲς, τὸ, τί κατηγορεῖται, παρὰ τῶν Ἰουδαίων, ἔλυσεν αὐτὸν ἀπὸ τῶν δεσμῶν, καὶ ἐκέλευσεν ἐλθεῖν τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ ὅλον τὸ συνέδριον αὐτῶν· καὶ καταγαγὼν τὸν Παῦλον ἔστησεν εἰς αὐτούς.

On the morrow, because he would have known the certainty wherefore he was accused of the Jews, he loosed him from his bands, and commanded the Chief Priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down, and set him before them.

CHAP. XXIII.-VER. 1. Ατένισας δὲ ὁ Παῦλος τα συνεδρία, εἶπεν· *Ανδρες ἀδελφοὶ, ἐγὼ πάση συνειδήσει ἀγα θῇ πεπολίτευμαι τῷ Θεῷ ἄχρι ταύτης της ἡμέρας.

And Paul, earnestly beholding the council, said, Men and brethren, I have lived in all good conscience before God until this day.

VER. 2.

Ο δὲ ἀρχιερεὺς ̓Ανανίας ἐπέταξε τοῖς παρεστῶσιν αὐτῷ, τύπτειν αὐτοῦ τὸ στόμα.

And the High Priest Ananias commanded them that stood by him to smite him on the mouth.

VER. 3.

Τότε ὁ Παῦλος πρὸς αὐτὸν εἶπε· Τύπτει σε μέλλει ὁ Θεὸς, τοῖχε κεκονιαμένει καὶ σὺ κάθῃ κρίνων με κατὰ τὸν νόμον, καὶ παι ρανομῶν κελεύεις με τύπτεσθαι ;

Then said Paul unto him, Ged shall smite thee, thou whited wall : for sittest thou to judge me after the law, sand commandest me to be smitten contrary to the law?

Εγένετο δὲ κραυγὴ μεγάλη καὶ ἀναστάντες οἱ Γραμματεῖς τοῦ μέρους τῶν Φαρισαίων διεμάχοντο, λέγοντες· Οὐδὲν και κὲν εὑρίσκομεν ἐν τῷ ἀνθρώπῳ τούτῳ· εἰ δὲ

And they that stood by said, Revilest thou God's High Priest?

VER. 5.

Εφη τε ὁ Παῦλος· Οὐκ ᾔδειν, ἀδελφοί, ὅτι ἐστὶν ἀρχιερεύς· γέγραπται γάρ. "Αρ. χοντα τοῦ λαοῦ σου οὐκ ἐρεῖς κακῶς.

Then said Paul, I wist not, brethren, that he was the High Priest: for it is written, Thou shalt not speak evil of the ruler of thy people.

aThou shalt not revile the gods, nor curse the ruler of thy people, Exod. xxii. 28.

VER. 6.

Γνοὺς δὲ ὁ Παῦλος ὅτι τὸ ἓν μέρος ἐστὶ Σαδδουκαίων, τὸ δὲ ἕτερον Φαρισαίων, ἔκραξεν ἐν τῷ συνεδρίων "Ανδρες ἀδελφοὶ, ἐγὼ Φαρισαῖος εἰμι, υἱὸς Φαρισαίου· περὶ ἐλπί δες καὶ ἀναστάσεως νεκρῶν ἐγὼ κρίνομαι.

• But when Paul perceived that the one part were Sadducees, and the other Pharisees, he cried out in the council, Men and brethren, I am a Pharisee, the son of a Pharisee of the hope and resurrection of the dead I am called in question.

a Behold, I send you forth as sheep in the midst of wolves: be ye therefore wise as serpents, and harmless as doves, Matt. x. 16.

VER. 7.

Τοῦτο δὲ αὐτοῦ λαλήσαντος, ἐγένετο στάσις τῶν Φαρισαίων καὶ τῶν Σαδδουκαίων· καὶ ἐσχίσθη τὸ πλῆθος.

And when he had so said, there arose a dissension between the Pharisees and the Sadducees: and the multitude was divided.

VER. 8.

Σαδδουκαῖοι μὲν γὰρ λέγουσι μὴ εἶναι ἀνάστασιν, μηδὲ ἄγγελον, μήτε πνεῦμα· Φαρισαῖοι δὲ ὁμολογοῦσι τὰ ἀμφότερα.

For the Sadducees say that there is no resurrection, neither angel, nor spirit: but the Pharisees confess both.

Νῦν οὖν ὑμεῖς ἐμφανίσατε τῷ χιλίαρχο, σὺν τῷ συνεδρίῳ, ὅπως αὔριον αὐτὸν καταγάγῃ πρὸς ὑμᾶς, ὡς μέλλοντας διαγινώσκειν ἀκριβέστερον τὰ περὶ αὐτοῦ· ἡμεῖς δὲ, πρὸ τοῦ ἐγγίσαι αὐτὸν, ἕτοιμοι ἐσμεν τοῦ ἀνελεῖν αὐτόν.

Now therefore ye with the council signify to the chief captain that he bring him down unto you to-morrow, as though ye would enquire something more perfectly concerning him: and we, or ever he come near, are ready to kill him.

VER. 16. ̓Ακούσας δὲ ὁ υἱὸς τῆς ἀδελφῆς Παύλου τὸ ἔνεδρον, παραγενόμενος καὶ εἰσελθὼν εἰς τὴν παρεμβολὴν, ἀπήγγειλε τῷ Παύλῳ.

And when Paul's sister's son heard of their lying in wait, he went and entered into the castle, and told Paul.

VER. 17.

Προσκαλεσάμενος δὲ ὁ Παῦλος ἕνα τῶν ἑκατοντάρχων, ἔφη· Τὸν νεανίαν τοῦτον ἀπάγαγε πρὸς τὸν χιλίαρχον· ἔχει γάρ τι ἀπαγγεῖλαι αὐτῷ.

Then Paul called one of the centurions unto him, and said, Bring this young man unto the chief captain: for he hath a certain thing to tell him.

VER. 18.

Ὁ μὲν οὖν παραλαβὼν αὐτὸν ἤγαγε πρὸς τὸν χιλίαρχον, καί φησιν. Ο δέσμιος παύλος, προσκαλεσάμενός με, ἠρώτησε τοῦτον τὸν νεανίαν ἀγαγεῖν πρός σε, ἔχοντά τι λαλῆσαί σοι.

So he took him, and brought him to the chief captain, and said, Paul the prisoner called me unto him, and prayed me to bring this young man unto thee, who hath something to say unto thee.

VER. 19.

Επιλαβόμενος δὲ τῆς χειρὸς αὐτοῦ ὁ χιλίαρχος, καὶ ἀναχωρήσας κατ' ἰδίαν, ἐπυνθάνεται τί ἐστιν ὃ ἔχεις ἀπαγγεῖλαί μα;

A. D. 60.

Then the chief captain took him by the hand, and went with him aside privately, and asked him, What is that

thou hast to tell me?

VER. 20.

Εἶπε δέ· Ὅτι οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι συνέθεντο του

ἐρωτῆσαί σε ὅπως αὔριον εἰς τὸ συνέδριον καταγάγῃς τὸν Παῦλον, ὡς μέλλοντές τι ἀκριβέστερον συνθάνεσθαι περὶ αὐτοῦ.

And he said, The Jews have agreed to desire thee that thou wouldest bring deum Paul to-morrow into the council, as though they would enquire somewhat of him more perfectly.

VER. 21.

Σὺ οὖν μὴ πεισθῇς αὐτοῖς· ἐνεδρεύουσι γὰρ αὐτὸν ἐξ αὐτῶν ἄνδρες πλείους τέσσαράκοντα, οἵτινες ἀνεθεμάτισαν ἑαυτοὺς μήν τε φαγεῖν, μήτε πιεῖν, ἕως οὗ ἀνέλωσιν αὐτ τόν· καὶ νῦν ἕτοιμοί εἰσι, προσδεχόμενοι τὴν ἀπὸ σοῦ ἐπαγγελίας.

But do not thou yield unto them: for there lie in wait for him of them mere than forty men, which have bound themselves with an oath, that they will neihim: and now are they ready, looking ther eat nor drink till they have killed for a promise from thee.

VER. 92.

Ὁ μὲν οὖν χιλίαρχος ἀπέλυσε τον νεα νίαν, παραγγείλας μηδενὶ ἐκλαλῆσαι ὅτι ταῦτα ἐνεφάνισας πρός με.

So the chief captain then let the young man depart, and charged him, see thou tell no man that thou hast shewed these things to me.

VER. 23.

Καὶ προσκαλεσάμενος δύο τινὰς τῶν έκατοντάρχων, εἶπεν· Ἑτοιμάσατε στρατιώτας διακοσίους, ὅπως πορευθῶσιν ἕως και σαρείας, καὶ ἱππεῖς ἑβδομήκοντα καὶ δι ξιολάβους διακοσίους, ἀπὸ τρίτης ὥρας τῆς νυκτός·

And he called unto him two centurions,

saying, Make ready two hundred soldiers to go to Casarea, and horsemen threescore and ten, and spearmen two hundred, at the third hour of the night;

VER. 24.

Κτήνη τε παραστῆσαι, ἵνα ἐπιβιβάσαν τες τὸν Παῦλον διασώσωσι πρὸς Φήλικα τὸν ἡγεμόνα.

Then the soldiers, as it was commanded them, took Paul, and brought him by night to Antipatris.

Διακούσομαί σου, ἔφη, ὅταν καὶ οἱ κα τήγοροί σου παραγένωνται. Εκέλευσέ τε αὐτὸν ἐν τῷ πραιτωρίῳ τοῦ Ἡρώδου φυλάσσεσθαι.

I will hear thee, said he, when thing accusers are also come. And he commanded him to be kept in Herod's judgment hall.

CHAP. XXIV.—VER. 1. Μετὰ δὲ πέντε ἡμέρας κατέβη ὁ ̓Αρχιε ρεὺς ̓Ανανίας μετὰ τῶν πρεσβυτέρων, καὶ ῥήτορος Τερτύλλου τινὸς, οἵτινες ἐνεφάνισαν τῷ ἡγεμόνι κατὰ τοῦ Παύλου.

And after five days Ananias the High Priest descended with the elders, and with a certain orator named Tertullus, who informed the governor against Paul.

VER. 2.

Κληθέντος δὲ αὐτοῦ, ἤρξατο κατηγορεῖν ὁ Τέρτυλλος, λέγων· Πολλῆς ερἰήνης τυχο χάνοντες διὰ σοῦ, καὶ κατορθωμάτων γινομένων τῷ ἔθνει τούτῳ διὰ τῆς σῆς προνοίας, And when he was called forth, Tertul

Ελπίδα ἔχων εἰς τὸν Θεὸν, ἂν καὶ αὐτοὶ

ταῦτα οὕτως ἔχειν.

ἔσεσθαι νεκρῶν, δικαίων τε καὶ ἀδίκων.
