for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not, ver. 18.. Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me, 20. For I delight in the law of God after a the inward man :

a For he is not a Jew, which is one outwardly; neither is that circumcision which is outward in the flesh : But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter, whose praise is not of men, but of God, Rom. ii. 28, 29. For which cause we faint not; but though our outward man perish, yet the inward man is renewed day by day, 2 Cor. iv. 16. That he would grant you, according to the riches of his glory, to be strengthened with might by his Spirit in the inner man, Eph. iii. 16. But let it be the hidden man of the heart, in that which is not corruptible, even the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price, 1 Pet. iii. 4.

This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh. For the flesh lusteth against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh and these are contrary the one to the other: so that ye cannot do the things that ye would, Gal. v. 16, 17., But thou, Ο man of God, fee these things ; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses, 1 Tim. vi. 11, 12. From whence come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members? James iv. 1.

Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. * But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, long-suffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance against such there is no law. And they that are Christ's have crucified the flesh with the affections and lusts, Gal. v. 22-24. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word; That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish, Eph. v. 25-27. And you, that were sometime alienated, and enemies in your mind by wicked works, yet now hath he reconciled, In the body of his flesh through death, to present you holy, and unblameable, and unreproveable in his sight, Col. i.

That which is born of the flesh is flesh; and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit, John iii. 6. So then they that are in the flesh cannot please God, viii. 8. Wherefore I give you to understand, that no man speaking by the Spirit of God calleth Jesus accursed; and that no man can say that

Mortify therefore your members which are upon the earth; fornication, uncleanness, inordinate affection, evil concupiscence, and covetousness, which is idolatry: for which things' sake the wrath of God cometh on the children of disobedience: In the which ye also walked sometime, when ye lived in them. But now ye also put off all these; anger, wrath, malice, blasphemy, filthy communication out of your mouth. Lie not one to another, seeing that ye have put off the old man with his deeds, Col. iii. 59. Dearly beloved, I beseech you as strangers and pilgrims, abstain from fleshly lusts, which war against the soul, 1 Pet. ii. 11.

VER. 14.

Οσοι γὰρ Πνεύματι Θεοῦ ἄγονται, οὗτοί εἰσιν υἱοὶ Θεοῦ.

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God.

a Teach me to do thy will; for thou art my God: thy Spirit is good; lead me into the land of uprightness, Psal. cxliii. 10. Thus saith the LORD, thy Redeemer, the Holy One of Israel; I am the LORD thy God which teacheth thee to profit, which leadeth thee by the way that thou shouldest go, Isa. xlvi. 17. But if ye be led of the Spirit, ye are not under the law,

̓́Αρα οὖν, ἀδελφοὶ, ὀφειλέται ἐσμὲν οὐ Gal. v. 18. If we live in the Spirit, τῇ σαρκὶ, τοῦ κατὰ σάρκα ζῆν.

Therefore, brethren, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live after the flesh. VER. 13.

Εἰ γὰρ κατὰ σάρκα ζῆτε, μέλλετε ἀποθνήσκειν· εἰ δὲ πνεύματι τὰς πράξεις τοῦ σώματος θανατοῦτε, ζήσεσθε.

For ye have not received a the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

οὐχ ἐκοῦσα, ἀλλὰ διὰ τὸν ὑποτάξαντα

Τῇ γὰρ ματαιότητι ἡ κτίσις ὑπετάγη,

a Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God; Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit ini our hearts, 2 Cor. i. 21, 22. Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit, v. 5. And grieve not the Holy Spirit of God, whereby ye are sealed unto the day of redemption, Eph. iv.

And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him. For if our hearts condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things. Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God, 1 John iii. 19-21. He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: he that believeth not God, bath made him a liar; because he believeth not the record that God gave of his Son, v. 10.
