PREFACE.

HE minor pieces of this celebrated writer, here presented to the public, are amongst the most characteristic of his numerous productions. In them we have a living portrait of their Author, both as a politician and as a divine; and accordingly his anonymous biographer has drawn considerably from the 'Thoughts,' and 'Contemplations,' in that portion of the life of Dr. Fuller, in which he professes to unfold his principles. His Good Thoughts in Bad Times were printed at Exeter in 1645 during his stay in that city, where he was appointed chaplain to the Princess Henrietta, who was born there at Bedford House, on the 16th of June. At Exeter he preached a Farewell Sermon, entitled Fear of losing the old Light: it was printed in London in 1646, and a copy of it is in the Library of Trinity College, Cambridge. He appears to have been an inhabitant of Exeter from about June 1644, to the surrender of that city into the hands of Sir Thomas Fairfax, in April 1646. Thence he
